🤕 Plantar plates tears🤕

This is an injury of the plantar plate. The plantar plate is a fibrocartilaginous structure that originates from the lesser metatarsal heads and attaches to the proximal phalanges.

🏃🏿It is a common cause of 2nd Metatarsal Phalangeal Joint (MPJ) pain amongst runners.

❗There are multiple causes of the condition such as:

 • High impact activities (jumping and running)
 • Bunion (poor 1st MPJ function causes lesser MPJs overuse)
 • Irregular Metatarsal length
 • Wearing high heeled shoes

It typically presents as pain in the ball of the foot that can progressively worsens over time.

💪🏿 It's key to offload the structure in the initial stages with taping, orthoses or footwer (rocker soled).

🤕 Peroneal Tendinopathy is an injury to one or both of the peroneal tendons.

⛹🏿‍♂️It is common amongst basketballers, runners and dancers.

❗There are multiple causes of the condition such as:

 • Overuse
 • Previous sprain
 • Weak ankles
 • Tight calf muscles
 • Poor fitting footwear

It typically presents as pain on the outside of the foot and ankle that progressively worsens.

💪🏿 It's key to strengthen the tendon as well as ligaments around the ankle for full recovery.

🤕 Plantar Fasciopathy (Plantar Fasciitis) is a painful condition occurring beneath the heel. It involves structural changes such as thickening and degenerative of the fascia. As well as, inflammatory changes.

😲 It is one of the most common foot injuries, affecting 1 in 10 people in their lifetime.

❗ There are multiple causes of the condition such as :

 • Tightness of the calf
 • Footwear with poor cushioning/or support through the arch of the foot
 • Large increases in training load or change to training surface
 • Trauma

👣 The symptoms and treatment options are described in the post above.

Around 90% of cases will resolve within 12 months with non invasive treatment. However treatment needs to be tailored for the best results.

Orthoses are devices which redistribute the forces acting on the foot when walking or running. They can be a useful adjunct in the treatment of many sports injuries.

Above is an example of a device to help in the management of a plantar plate injury.
