🤕 Plantar plates tears🤕
This is an injury of the plantar plate. The plantar plate is a fibrocartilaginous structure that originates from the lesser metatarsal heads and attaches to the proximal phalanges.
🏃🏿It is a common cause of 2nd Metatarsal Phalangeal Joint (MPJ) pain amongst runners.
❗There are multiple causes of the condition such as:
• High impact activities (jumping and running)
• Bunion (poor 1st MPJ function causes lesser MPJs overuse)
• Irregular Metatarsal length
• Wearing high heeled shoes
It typically presents as pain in the ball of the foot that can progressively worsens over time.
💪🏿 It's key to offload the structure in the initial stages with taping, orthoses or footwer (rocker soled).
