A slightly tumultuous time for Philadelphia Hen.
After noticing something wasn’t quite right, I took her to the vet, where she was immediately taken into surgery to empty her crop. She had managed to ingest what seemed like half a meadow of long grass.
After 13 years with no issues, she reminded me how much there is still to learn about caring for these animals.
Phil then spent two weeks resting in a makeshift bed in the house, occasionally watching TV, though she was not impressed, followed by two more weeks in isolation while she healed and the medication worked its way through her system. By the end of the month, she was very ready to be back with her flock.
She is, without question, trouble. Always getting into everything, strong, curious and rarely still like the others. She even helped me move the large stones in the courtyard, nearly taking me with them. And now, of course, she remembers her time indoors and regularly tries her luck at coming back in.
This experience has also made me reflect on the meadow here at Mind Pebble. Allowing nature to grow freely is part of the ethos, but it’s made me reconsider how I manage that balance moving forward.
Love is a powerful thing. We quietly do what needs to be done for those we care about, even when it’s inconvenient, stressful or unexpected.
And yet, we don’t always offer that same patience and care to ourselves.
