Bute Campaign to extend Thomson Court residential care home for the elderly

Bute Campaign to extend Thomson Court residential care home for the elderly Thomson Court is a residential care home on Bute. Recently a project to increase the number of spaces from 9 to 14 was put on hold.

This campaign is to voice our concerns to Argyll and Bute Council and MSPs to continue the extension.

THOMSON COURT FUTURE

💥🔥VERY IMPORTANT 🔥💥

A VERY IMPORTANT, somewhat under publicised statement, has been made by
Argyll and Bute Health and Social Care Partnership HSCP regarding their plans for future social care.

What are they considering? - copy from their proposal
'introducing a “ceiling of care” or a threshold level of care which was available to an individual.
A level of 25 hours of social care per week which is equivalent to the cost of a residential care placement.

If this is approved =
• would put a threshold or limit on the amount of care that could be commissioned of 25 hours per week

• 💥💥💥🔥🔥If your assessed care need was greater than this we would put different planning and approval in place to ensure that we were prioritising need and maintaining fair access to care. This may require consideration of residential care if appropriate.'💥💥💥🔥🔥🔥

'The Independent Care Inspectorate' issued in July 2025 a report in which they stated the following on Thomson Court.

"The environment may not be safe and the building had not been well maintained over a period of years. The provider should make significant improvements to ensure people are safe and experience a comfortable environment to live in.
There had been a planned refurbishment of the service which included rewiring of the building, however this had been paused by the provider due to provider financial constraints. Building and environmental improvements are required urgently to keep people safe"

The HSCP and Argyll and Bute Council have already renaged on the extra beds promised at Thomson Court pending a review. This exercise forms part of this review and it appears they hope YOU WONT NOTICE.

The timing and communication of this 'Consultation' has been understated considering how important it is. They favour an 'online' option for feedback. A large percentage of those affected either have no access to a online facility, or are not confident to access and complete the survey online.

There are approximately 3500 residents aged 50 or over on Bute. Approx 2000 of those are over 65.

The decisions A&B HSCP make NOW will affect the short and medium term future for all these 3500, not those just currently needing care.

OVER 50? THAT MEANS YOU

PLEASE
1. Go to the meeting in person. Take people with you.

2. Fill in the survey. If you have friends without access to the online questionnaire offer to help them access and complete. You only need your name and address to complete and register your comments.

3.If you are a member of a social group pass the message on. Unfortunately cant share from this page but you can copy and paste and post this on your personal page. Message everyone you know.

Don't be silent, dont be a victim of 'Our Survey Said' The Isle of Bute was not interested.

SCAREMONGERING? Maybe 🤔
Current facts as it stands -
1. Extra beds put on hold.
2. Under investment in Thomson Court over a number of years.
3. Poor Communication of the consultation from which they will make their decisions.
4. A clear instruction from 'The Independent Care Inspectorate' to make significant improvements to the building.
5. Calculations indicating they have decided "over a 'ceiling of care",
it is cheaper to insist on residential care.
THOMSON COURT ONLY HAS 9 BEDS 🙈🙈🙈. A LOTTERY
6. Could this review conclude better to use and expand facilities they already have, that won't need investment. 🤔🤔🤔.

Want to take the risk?

WASTE OF TIME? maybe but at least we have tried have you?

OVER TO YOU. TO THE 3500 RESIDENTS IT WILL IMPACT SOONER THAN YOU THINK SPEAK UP.

Apathy on this now could mean a one way ticket to the mainland in the 'autumn of your years'.

YOU NEED TO SPEAK UP!

🚨 URGENT – HAVE YOUR SAY ON BUTE’S CARE FUTURE 🚨

Argyll & Bute Health and Social Care Partnership is proposing a 25-hour per week cap on care at home — claiming it’s the same cost as residential care.

If this goes ahead:
• The maximum care at home would be 25 hours/week.
• If you need more, you could face moving into a care home instead.

💥 This affects ALL 3,500 residents on Bute aged 50+, not just those in care now.

Thomson Court:
• Extra beds promised have been put on hold.
• The Care Inspectorate says the building is in urgent need of safety and maintenance upgrades.

The Problem

Most older residents on Bute aren’t online. This “consultation” is mainly digital — meaning many people who will be affected may not get to have their say.

We are calling on HSCP to post a paper questionnaire to EVERY household on Bute with a stamped return envelope.

How You Can Help

1️⃣ Attend the face-to-face meeting – Bank of Ideas, Tuesday 12 August, 10am–12pm & 1pm–3pm
Details: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1SCWv2Sngm/

2️⃣ Complete the online survey – it only takes a few minutes:
https://www.facebook.com/share/p/16rVs6Lwh2/

3️⃣ Tell others – share this in your groups, clubs, churches, and with neighbours.

🛑 Don’t let them say “Bute wasn’t interested.”
Your voice matters — speak now or risk losing the choice to receive care at home.

Three days and counting down / Thank you for your precious support. We have collected over 1000 signatures and …

On Friday we will compile and submit the petition signatures and letters of support and need, requesting the council to re-start the extension of Thomson Court.

Please send your emails saveourdaycentre@gmail.com and letters this week / asap so they can be included in the submission to the council and Jenny Minto MSP.
Paper letters can be dropped at Janine Flower Shop, Print Point or the Port Post Office addressed to Argyll and Bute Council - Thomson Court.

You can mention reasons why you think the elderly should have the option to remain beside friends and family in the place they call home.
And if you have had any adverse experiences around relatives or friends in mainland care homes.

Thank you again for your precious support.

THOMSON COURT CARE HOME NEEDS YOU —

Last time, your voices saved the Day Centre. Now we need that same united force to fight for Thomson Court’s promised expansion — a vital increase from 9 to 14 full-time care beds.

A full review last March confirmed the urgent need. Funding was secured. Hope was real.

But now — the extension is on hold.

We can’t accept this. Not quietly. Not again.

Here’s how you can help:

1. SIGN OR SHARE THE PETITION:
https://www.change.org/ThomsonCourt_2025
Prefer paper? PAPER PETITIONS available at Print Point, Bute Tools, Port Post Office. More locations posted Friday.

2. SHARE YOUR STORY:
Were you hoping for one of those beds? Do you care for someone who needs that space? Your stories made a difference last time — they will again.
Email: saveourdaycentre@gmail.com
Or drop letters at the same shops above.

This is about more than extra beds, it will result in an investment in locally in Bute over £250,000 annually which will be spent on salaries providing care and in local shops.

We will be submitting signatures to the council's Health and Social Care Partnership mid May. Thank you for your support.
