The results speak for themselves with this one…

35kg down in 12 months!

But they only tell a snippet of the journey that Deanna has been on over the last 12 months.

After trying many methods over the years that all led to the same point, she wanted to finally find one that would get her where she wanted.

She also wasn’t afraid to put in the work and be patient.

Deanna has nailed her nutrition targets, her steps, and her training sessions every week without fail. She truly has done everything in her power to achieve what she set out to do.

And I couldn’t be prouder. Deanna is a completely different person not just physically, but mentally as well.

Well done Deanna šŸ’Ŗ

When your trainer says ā€œIt’s you against youā€ šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«

Nowadays it’s so easy to look at what we achieve and compare it to the very top 1% of people in the world.

This can lead to us feeling demotivated, flat and uninspired.

We see how far away we are from the top of the mountain…

… hang on a second, when did getting to the top of the mountain become the goal?

Whatever happened to just doing better than your previous effort?

Ambition is an amazing motivator.

But strive to do better than previous you.

Don’t aim for an ideal that you saw on your social media feed.

And if you need a hand in beating you, I can help.

Meet Tim

Tim came to me looking to ACTUALLY get it right.

No more weight loss straight into weight gain.

No more injuries from being told to do box jumps in his first session šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«

So what did we do to get him from the left to the right?

šŸ’Ŗ We strength trained 3 times per week, focussing on progressing a little every session.

šŸŽ We set a calorie deficit and protein target, with wiggle room for weekends

🦶 We monitored activity, aiming for 8-12k steps daily.

And did Tim find it difficult?

Occasionally! But because our target wasn’t extreme, it was always achievable.

And it doesn’t have to be extreme, it really doesn’t.

So if you were like Tim and you feel like you keep running through the same cycle…

DM me ā€˜CYCLE’ and let’s get to work šŸ’Ŗ

How I’m training for a 10km PB whilst I…

… Stay injury free

… Enjoy my training

… Have a life

So what’s my game plan?

3-4 Run sessions per week consisting of speed sessions, tempo work and long runs…

2 strength sessions covering plyometrics, upper and lower strength, and core…

Dial in nutrition Monday to Friday aiming for maintenance calories and keeping protein high, allowing myself more freedom at the weekend…

And not neglecting my stretching and mobility work…

A few boxes a week that need to be ticked, and I’ll get quicker.

And you can do the same… whether you want to lose weight, get stronger or fitter, or anything else.

It’s not about being perfect 100% of the time, it’s about setting REALISTIC tick boxes and making sure you get them done šŸš€

The truth about cold therapy and why it’s not always the best idea…

With most people’s self worth directly linked with how many ice baths they’ve done this week, it’s easy to think that cold therapy is always a win.

Here’s why it’s not ALWAYS the best idea.

When we expose our bodies to old, we reduce inflammation within the body. Great right?

Well, with this blunting of inflammation, we also blunt the signal that we are trying to send our bodies that leads to it adapting, becoming, stronger, fitter and faster.

So in basic terms, if you ice directly after your training session, you will not be maximising your chances of getting the best results.

So when should you ice?

During competition and race.

Our aim during this time is not to adapt, but to bounce back and recover from the effort.

This decrease in inflammation will allow our bodies to return to baseline as quickly as possible and have you ready for another effort.

So, next time someone shames you for not shoving ice down your trousers after your next training session send them to me šŸ¤

Should you measure your blood sugar?!

With all the tracking apps and devices available nowadays, it’s hard to keep up.

Fairly recently, mainly in response to a popular book, people have started wearing CGMs (continuous glucose monitors) to track their glucose levels with the aim of improving health and performance.

As a personal trainer who lives with Type 1 Diabetes and has to track blood glucose in response to my insulin and nutrition regime, here’s my take…

1ļøāƒ£ It might help you understand your body better

Like many tracking apps and devices, having a measurable variable that changes in response to your habits is a great way of improving. Measuring your glucose might help you get a grasp of how different foods affect you, as well as timing these strategies with different forms of exercise.

2ļøāƒ£ It might not really tell you anything…

If you eat a nutritious whole food diet and exercise regularly, the chances are your blood sugars are fine. The tiny fluctuations in your levels are completely normal and reading too much into this is pointless.

3ļøāƒ£ Most sensors are designed for Diabetics

Echoing the previous point, these small fluctuations are mostly harmless, and furthermore sensors are unlikely to pick up on much of these as they are designed for larger variance in blood sugar which is seen in diabetic patients.

4ļøāƒ£ Ā£100 a month

The most popular sensor is the FreeStyle Libre 2. This costs around Ā£50 per sensor and each one lasts 2 weeks. So you’ll have to decide whether it’s worth Ā£100 a month for you!

Would you try it? Comment below šŸ‘‡
