October - Breast Cancer Awareness Month 🩷

Each year, about 55,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK. It is more common in people over 50, but it can also affect younger people & men too.

Checking your breasts for any unusual changes can help discover breast cancer early. It’s important to recognise when something’s not right.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women. But there are still some things you might not know about it. Breast cancer in its earliest stages doesn’t usually have any symptoms. (Scroll above to see other symptoms to look out for)

The Macmillan Support Line is a free & confidential phone service for people living & affected by cancer. If you need to talk, they are there to listen.
Free to call: 0808 808 0000

Counselling helps people cope with the emotional, practical, & personal challenges of a cancer diagnosis by providing a safe, confidential space to explore feelings, improve coping skills, & find solutions to problems related to their cancer journey. It can address anxiety, depression, relationship issues, & difficulties with everyday life by helping you process emotions, understand your thoughts, & make informed decisions about your life & treatment.

Support groups: Connecting with other people living with cancer & their families through support groups can also offer valuable insights & emotional support.

World Heart Day is a global event to raise awareness & educate people about cardiovascular disease (CVD) & ways to help keep our hearts healthy. Created by the World Heart Federation today is designed to help encourage people to take care of their heart health & control risk factors that may contribute to CVD both for themselves, & for others.

The theme for World Heart Day 2025 is “Don’t Miss a Beat”. This global campaign encourages people to take action for healthier hearts by moving more, connecting with loved ones, & building healthier, more active communities to prevent cardiovascular disease deaths.

What the theme encourages:
🏃🏽‍♀️Movement: Engage in physical activity to protect your heart.
😘 Connection: Spend time with loved ones to improve well-being.
🏘️ Community Health: Advocate for urban spaces that promote clean air, nutritious food, & equitable access to healthcare.

Counselling can help with heart related medical conditions by providing support for the emotional distress, such as anxiety & depression, that often accompanies a cardiac diagnosis or event, leading to improved quality of life, better self-care, & reduced risk of future cardiac problems. It can also help you develop coping strategies for stress, manage social isolation, & identify harmful thinking patterns through techniques like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

If it feels like the right time for you to focus on you & to explore your feelings & emotions and any challenges or concerns you may have, why not get in touch with me for a free 15 minute chat to see how we could work together 💚

Today is World Environmental Health Day. The 2025 theme as ‘Clean Air, Healthy People’. This day emphasises the critical connection between environmental factors & human health, highlighting issues such as air pollution & climate change.

Environmental concerns significantly impact mental health by inducing eco-anxiety & grief, & can induce trauma from extreme weather, which contributes to depression & anxiety due to factors like air pollution & declining access to nature. These issues stem from the awareness of threats to the future, disruption of communities, & deteriorating physical environments, creating a sense of helplessness & distress for many individuals.

😩 Eco-Anxiety & Ecological Grief: Awareness of climate change, deforestation, and other environmental degradation can lead to feelings of fear, sadness, and grief for the planet’s future, sometimes called eco-anxiety or ecological grief.

Addressing the Impacts
♻️Taking Action: Engaging in small, meaningful actions, like reducing waste or participating in community efforts, can restore a sense of agency & hope, helping to alleviate anxiety.
📱Mindful Media Consumption:
Monitoring how much news & information about environmental threats you consume can help manage anxiety.

If it feels like the right time for you to focus on you & to explore your feelings & emotions and any challenges or concerns you may have, why not get in touch with me for a free 15 minute chat to see how we could work together 💚

This year’s World Dream Day 2025 theme is “Dream Together”. The theme encourages unity, collaboration, & shared vision to create a better world, building on the idea that dreams & actions become more powerful when collective effort is applied to achieve shared goals. The theme highlights the importance of fostering togetherness & connection at a time when the world can feel divided.

Follow your dreams” means to actively pursue your deep-seated passions, goals, & aspirations, even when they seem challenging or unconventional. It’s about listening to your heart, taking action to achieve what truly fulfills you, & not settling for a path that doesn’t feel right. Following your dreams can lead to greater happiness, self-confidence, & a profound sense of purpose in your life.

Psychological Theories
💭 Reflecting the unconscious: Pioneering psychologists like Sigmund Freud believed dreams are a window into the subconscious, revealing repressed desires & unresolved issues.
💬 Processing emotions and experiences: Dreams may help the brain process stressful situations, emotions, & thoughts encountered during the day, allowing for a form of emotional regulation.
🧠Problem-solving and memory consolidation: Some theories suggest dreams assist in consolidating memories & can even help with creative problem-solving.

💚 Counselling can uncover the subconscious:
Through dream analysis, it can shed light on repressed thoughts & emotions that influence your waking life, offering new perspectives for achieving your dreams.
💚 Decide on redirection: It can assist you in recognising when a dream may be unattainable or misaligned with your current needs, helping you to wisely let go or redirect your passion toward other meaningful pursuits.
💚 Break down goals: It can guide you in setting realistic, incremental goals & developing a step-by-step plan to make your dream a reality.

To lower cortisol, prioritise high-quality sleep, engage in regular low-impact exercise, practice stress-management techniques like meditation & deep breathing, maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, & omega-3s, & foster positive social relationships. Limiting caffeine & alcohol, avoiding screens before bed, & spending time in nature can also help manage cortisol levels.

Tips for managing cortisol
😴 Get quality sleep: Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep per night & practice good sleep habits, such as avoiding screens & maintaining a consistent sleep schedule.
🏃🏽‍♀️Get regular exercise: Engage in regular physical activity, such as walking, yoga, or swimming, to help manage stress & improve sleep.
🌲Spend time in nature: Simply spending time outdoors can have a calming effect & help reduce cortisol levels.
✍️Journaling & hobbies: Writing down your thoughts or engaging in enjoyable activities can help relieve stress & promote feelings of well-being.
🫂Maintain healthy relationships: Positive social connections can increase overall happiness & positively impact your physical health.
🩺 Seek professional help: If you are concerned about your cortisol levels, speak with a healthcare professional for guidance & diagnosis.

Counselling helps reduce cortisol by fostering a safe space to understand & manage stress, promoting healthier coping mechanisms, & encouraging mindfulness & relaxation. By improving emotional regulation, setting healthy boundaries & facilitating lifestyle changes, talking can calm the body’s stress response system, leading to lower cortisol levels.

09/09/2025

Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS) Awareness Month is a global healthcare event observed annually throughout September, aiming to improve the lives of those affected by PCOS and to help them overcome their symptoms.

It is a severe genetic, hormone, metabolic & reproductive disorder that affects women & girls. It is the leading cause of female infertility & a precursor for other severe conditions, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease & endometrial cancer.

Symptoms of PCOS
Symptoms typically appear during late teens or early 20s & can include:
👩🏻‍🦰Irregular or missed periods: Infrequent, unpredictable, or absent menstrual cycles.
👱🏽‍♀️Difficulty getting pregnant: Due to irregular or absent ovulation.
👩🏾‍🦱Excess hair growth (hirsutism): On the face, chest, back, or buttocks.
🧒🏼Acne or oily skin: Oily skin and acne, particularly on the face.
👩🏽Hair thinning: Male-pattern baldness or thinning hair on the scalp.
👩‍🦱Weight gain: Especially around the stomach.
👧🏻Ovaries with many follicles: The ovaries may contain a large number of small, undeveloped sacs (follicles) that can’t release an egg, though this isn’t always visible & doesn’t mean cysts are present, according to some sources.

Counselling helps women with PCOS manage the condition’s significant psychological effects, such as depression, anxiety, & body image issues, by providing coping strategies, improving self-esteem, & offering support for infertility-related distress.

If it feels like the right time for you to focus on you & to explore your feelings & emotions and any challenges or concerns you may have, why not get in touch with me for a free 15 minute chat to see how we could work together.

04/09/2025

Feelings of despair are characterised by a profound loss of hope, often accompanied by a sense of hopelessness & helplessness. These feelings can manifest as intense sadness, irritability, & a lack of motivation or interest in activities. Despair can be triggered by various situations, including personal setbacks, relationship difficulties, or feelings of isolation. It’s important to recognize the signs of despair & seek support.

Despair can be:
😞 Loss of hope: Despair is essentially the complete absence of hope, where one feels there is no possibility of things getting better.
😢 Hopelessness: This feeling can lead to the belief that one’s situation is unchangeable and that no one can help.
😫 Emotional distress: Despair can manifest as intense sadness, irritability, hostility, and a general sense of heaviness.
😕 Anhedonia: This is the inability to experience pleasure, leading to a lack of motivation and disengagement from activities that were once enjoyed.

Counselling can be a helpful tool in managing feelings of despair by providing a safe space to explore emotions, develop coping mechanisms, & gain a better understanding of the root causes of these feelings.

It’s important to remember that feelings of despair can be temporary, & with the right support & coping strategies, it is possible to regain hope & move forward. If you are struggling with feelings of despair, please reach out for help 💚
