You can build physical activity into your daily routine a few different ways; perhaps doing some squats whilst waiting for the kettle to boil or meet with friends or family for an outdoor walk.

You can also set reminders for yourself to stand up frequently to avoid sitting for longer periods of time.

Doing some physical activity is good, more is better and every minute counts. Setting goals helps you to get started, stay on track and feel a sense of achievement!

Once you have achieved your goal, ways to build on it could be by increasing the frequency, intensity, type of activity and time spent doing it.

A lovely testimonial from a patient discharged this week...

"After a serious abdominal operation, I was laid out in a rehab centre. My daughters felt that after a period of inactivity I needed a physiotherapist to put me on the road to recovery.

Paul started my treatment with great care and kindness. He is very experienced and it's something you can rely on. He produced an exercise guide for me which I intend to keep to for the rest of my life.

He started to give lots of exercises to get me walking again. It takes time and his patience is very helpful. At present I am walking using a stick where about 2 months ago I was flat on my back. I have actually walked about 50 yards completely unaided. I have moved from using a Zimmer frame, to crutch to walking stick to no aid. Surely a testament to Paul's planning, patience and understanding.
I have more work to do but Paul has given me all the tools I need to get myself walking again. His professionalism and humour are a great inspiration to me. Thanks Paul"

Activities which strengthen the muscles - like weightlifting - should be part of an older person's weekly exercise routine, a new study suggests.

But you don't have to go to the gym - carrying heavy shopping bags, digging in the garden and pilates all count!

Muscle and bone strength deteriorate as we get older, so keeping active everyday is important to slow this decline and reduce the risk of falls in later life!

Muscle-strengthening exercises are important in weekly exercise in old age, research suggests.

It’s always so lovely to receive a testimonial and this one paints a picture of the input that goes into supporting a patient when they have come home from hospital;

“I engaged with Paul from Proactive Home Physio after my dad had a fall and broke his arm back in November 2021. In addition, my dad has vascular dementia along with having a stroke back in August 2020. His mobility and balance is very poor due to his illness and with being in hospital and then moving to a home for a temporary period, where initially they wanted to keep him in a bed. I needed some help to get him out and moving. I contacted Paul and he was a very positive individual and we chatted and explained what I wanted to achieve. I didn't expect my dad would walk without assistance again, but all I needed was enough so he could walk with assistance in his bedroom and to get him out of our home to a car. Paul went to the home and worked with my dad showing him how to get in and out of bed and how to raise himself in and out of a chair. Over time we were then able to get him discharged and moved back home.

We faced many challenges as he had lost his strength from being in bed too long, but Paul worked hard on repetitive exercises and to help him walk in our home with all the challenges it offered. Paul made a massive difference to my dad and my dad liked Paul. It also enabled me to learn from Paul what he was doing and then for me on the days he wasn't with us to work hard with appropriate exercises. It has been a journey but despite the hospital telling me twice that my dad is confined to bed, I can walk with him down steps and around his bedroom. We can also can walk to the car now and he gets in and out so easy compared to our first attempts. This has given my dad and myself freedom to go out, this wouldn't have been possible without Paul. Thank you so much”
