One of our fantastic Food Stories judges : Graham Garrett - from glam rocker in the 80’s to Michelin starred chef at his fabulous restaurant , Graham is also the acclaimed author of an autobiographical cookbook, ‘Sex & Drugs & Sausage Rolls’ 🤩

We asked Graham what he’s looking for in a great food story and this was his answer:

“I would probably be looking for something that shows a strong personal connection to both the food and occasion. It could be humorous or emotional, something that cracks me up, make me cry, or makes me hungry!”

So, come on and tell us your fabulous food story: make Graham weep with joy or shed tears of laughter, or maybe want to invite himself to yours for dinner! 🍽️

Back to Basics…….. Water 💦

For me this is the first foundation of health and well-being - being hydrated 💧

I could bang on for hours about why, so be prepared for more to come in this subject 😆

So, first and foremost, water makes our bodies work better - it is key for good digestion (we need it to create stomach acid which breaks down protein; we need it to create our stools and enable them to move smoothly through our digestive system) - if our digestion is good it helps us extract and absorb the nutrients we need from our food. It supports our gut health which in turn helps our immunity, our brain function and our skin health.

Being hydrated helps our energy levels, supports our sleep, it helps with our cognitive function and ability to concentrate.

It flushes out toxins and helps reduce the risk of inflammation and oxidative damage which can lead to issues with our heart health.

So, if you are looking to start getting a bit healthier - if you only did one thing today, drink and extra glass of water or two 💧 💧

Reduce, or remove fizzy drinks 🥤, cut down the coffee ☕️, minimise fruit juice 🧃 and limit the alcohol 🍸.

If you feel hungry, have a glass of water before you reach for a snack, you might just be thirsty.

If you’re having a mid-afternoon slump, have a glass of water, you might just be a bit dehydrated.

Most people do not drink enough non-dehydrating drinks but think that they do!

Water, plain or sparkling, infused with fresh fruit or herbs, herbal teas, even milk are all good options.

How much water have you drink today? 💦

I can’t enter our Food Stories competition, but if I could I’d be talking about tomatoes 🍅

Every year I plant and grow tomatoes and every year I’m taken back to my Grandad in Devon and beautiful summers helping him out in his greenhouse.

He was the kindest, gentlest, most patient and the most caring man ever, with a cheeky twinkle in his eye and a calmness that radiated happiness with the world and himself.

And every year, as my tomatoes grow, and I get that ubiquitous aroma of sun-drenched tomato plants, I’m there, with the warmth of the sun through the glass, the scent of the plants and my lovely Grandad, pottering.

And it makes me smile and stop, just for a moment.

Food links us inextricably to people and places, to memories and emotions - what, who or where could you write about? We’d love to hear 🍝

Link for entering the competition can be found in my bio x
