What’s one feeding tip you wish someone had told you earlier?

It could be something practical, reassuring, or something that simply helped you feel less alone.

Maybe it was about cluster feeding, winding, positioning, bottle feeding, expressing, mixed feeding, night feeds, supply worries, or trusting your instincts.

Sometimes the smallest piece of advice can make the biggest difference when you’re tired, unsure, or trying to figure things out one feed at a time.

Share yours in the comments it might be exactly what another parent needs to read today.

One feed at a time

You might have a goal in mind for your feeding journey, whether that’s getting through the first few days, reaching six weeks, six months, or beyond.

Goals can be helpful, but sometimes they can also add pressure

It can be worth taking a step back and focusing on what feels manageable right now.

One day or even, One feed at a time. Less pressure. More “let’s see how this feed goes.”

Every feed gives you information, reassurance, practice, and another chance to trust yourself and your baby.

My antenatal breastfeeding sessions cover everything you need to get breastfeeding off to the best start, from physiology, skin-to-skin, the golden bubble, latch, positioning, and so much more.

But because they’re 1:1, we also have the time and space to tailor the session to you.

For one lovely mum to be I’ll be seeing in a few weeks, a key goal is exploring breastfeeding positions that feel comfortable and supportive with larger breasts.

So I’m doing the research, gathering the practical tips, and making sure our session is shaped around what she needs most.

Because every mum deserves to feel fully informed, prepared, and confident as she begins her feeding journey.

If you're looking for tailored support, please reach out to see how I can support you

Antenatal feeding preparation is not about deciding exactly how feeding will go.

It is about helping you feel more informed, more confident and more supported before your baby arrives.

In the blog, I talk about why feeding preparation matters, what it can help with, and how it can make the early days feel less overwhelming, whether you are planning to breastfeed, bottle feed, express, combination feed, or you are still unsure.

You’re not supposed to know everything about feeding straight away.

Before your baby arrives, so much focus goes into birth, nappies, sleep spaces, car seats and hospital bags.

But feeding?

Often, you’re just expected to somehow know what to do.

Then baby arrives and suddenly you’re trying to work out:

Is this latch right?
Are they getting enough?
Is this normal?
Should it hurt?
Why are they feeding again?
Am I doing something wrong?

And all of that is happening while you’re recovering, exhausted, hormonal, and getting to know a tiny new person.

So here’s your reminder:

Feeding is a skill for both you and your baby and like any skill, it can take time, patience and support.

If feeding feels overwhelming right now, you don’t have to figure it out alone.

My top 5 horror stories as a feeding coach

5. Routine feeding advice for a newborn

Because babies ( breast and formula fed) should be fed responsively

4. Top-up advice with no review plan

Top ups can be helpful, but they need a plan: how much, how often, why and when it’s being reassessed.

3. “My newborn is so good, they never wake for feeds”
A very sleepy newborn can sometimes be a sign they need feeding support

2. “It’s just a partial tongue tie”

Doesn't exist, you either have a lingual frenulum that affect function or not.

1. “Just give formula” with no evidence-based guidance
Formula can absolutely be part of the plan but parents deserve informed, personalised advice, not a throwaway comment.

Paced bottle feeding involves letting baby set the pace,

Bottle feeding shouldn't be rushed.

Hold baby fairly upright and keep the bottle more horizontal, so milk doesn’t flow too quickly.

Gently touch the teat to baby’s lips and wait for them to open wide, rather than popping it straight in.

Watch baby’s cues and offer little pauses throughout the feed. If they turn away, push the teat out, splay their fingers, spill milk, gulp, cough or seem overwhelmed, pause and give them a breather by dropping the bottle.

Switch sides partway through the feed, just as you might with breastfeeding, and try not to encourage baby to finish the bottle if they’re showing they’ve had enough.

Responsive feeding matters more than the ounces.

Paced feeding helps baby feel more in control and supports their natural fullness cues

Hungry? B**b. Tired? B**b. Upset? B**b. Overstimulated? B**b.
Breastfeeding isn’t just milk it’s comfort, connection, regulation and reassurance.

Sometimes b**b really is the answer.

Laid back feeding...
..A few tweaks and this positioning would be perfect

Make sure baby is tummy to tummy with you so all of their body is in contact with you and inline, this stimulates their reflexes and allows gravity to support them

Ensure babies head is free to tilt back

Allow baby to lead with their chin, which encourages a deeper latch.

Let baby explore with their hands and bob their head to latch on.
