Having a child with autism can put strain on you and your family. For fathers, they can often hide their emotions away and find it harder to accept advice from others.

A support group Fathers of Autistic Children Empowered to Support (FACES) has been established in Salford to promote collaborative problem solving and help enhance mental health and wellbeing for fathers of children with autism.

The walk and talk group meet at Clifton Country Park (outside the Café) on the third Saturday of the month and is helping create a network of dads who can share their experiences and support each other.

It provides an opportunity for both fathers and their children to make new friends and bond together in the outdoors.

Our brilliant inpatient research team have had lots of lovely comments from people taking part in their studies. These are just a few of the latest from volunteers on the ImRESP study, which is looking at the role respiratory infections play in persistently changing the immune system.
• The whole experience was very good, nurses were lovely and helpful and I am pleased to give something back.
• The research team are helpful,. polite and very understanding, they make me feel comfortable. I have a voice - I can talk about research and other things with the team as they never rush me or make me feel not welcome.
• Really glad to help give something back after all the care I have had. All the staff are wonderful and helpful so it is a positive experience. I hope the research will eventually help me and others.
• It's great to be able to help in research. Staff were really great throughout.

After an incredible 47 years in the NHS, Nicola Layton, team leader for wound care and lymphoedema at Bury, has retired.

Nicola led the service from the start and was a pillar of support and kindness. As a respected leader and mentor, her calm wisdom and encouragement helped shape the team and gave colleagues the confidence to thrive. She recognised everyone’s contribution and brought out the best in others.

Previously part of the district nursing team, Nicola’s knowledge, care and respect for patients and staff never went unnoticed.

As she trades her uniform for more time crafting, enjoying her new puppy, and relaxing with her husband she will be greatly missed. Join us in wishing Nicola all the best in her retirement!

Northern Care Alliance NHS Group

From April 2016, Salford Royal provided leadership and operational support to The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust (which currently runs The Royal Oldham Hospital, Fairfield General Hospital in Bury, Rochdale Infirmary and North Manchester General Hospital) following its CQC Inspection in February 2016.

This arrangement was formalised under a management agreement in April 2017, and paved the way for the establishment of the Northern Care Alliance NHS Group. From the 1st April 2017, the Northern Care Alliance NHS Group (NCA) was launched, bringing together over 17,000 staff, 2000 beds and serving a population of over 1 million.

With an operating budget of £1.3bn, our new Alliance provides the benefits of scale but delivers this locally through multiple hospital sites and local healthcare services. Four Care Organisations for Oldham, Bury/Rochdale, North Manchester and Salford are responsible for delivering safe, high quality and reliable care to the local communities they serve.
