All work and no play? Not on our watch. 🙌
Over the past year, we’ve been growing a community of hobby enthusiasts, connecting colleagues with free or discounted events, workshops and activities across Greater Manchester through our partner, HobbyHealth.
Access to new pastimes, and the chance to share hobbies with others, has helped many colleagues learn new skills, make new friends, and focus on their health and wellbeing.
Alessia, who was named a winner of one of our HobbyHealth competitions last year, said: “I joined the HobbyHealth app as I was already into running, dog walking and painting. Seeing the different types of hobbies people were posting across the NCA inspired me to try new things. This year, I’m going to do something a bit different and sign up to the Cinnamon Trust. It’s a charity where people who are Palliative / End of Life are not able to look after their pets. They look for volunteers to walk, feed, house sit or take their beloved animals to the groomers/vets. This helps the person who is very unwell as they are not worried about caring for their pet and it gives the furry friend some love and attention.”
Whether you’re picking up a new hobby this year or already have one you love, there’s a community waiting to welcome you.

After 12 years in nursing, Lorissa has finally found a role that fits her life.
“I have been qualified for 12 years and currently work as a community staff nurse with the Out of Hours team in Rochdale. District nursing appealed to me because I wanted to care for patients in the place where they feel most comfortable, and to help prevent hospital admissions wherever possible.
Working within the Out of Hours team means being there for patients during the night, often at their most vulnerable. It is incredibly rewarding to be able to provide reassurance, support, and high-quality care in their own homes at a time when they may feel frightened or alone.
One of the most meaningful aspects of district nursing for me is caring for end-of-life patients, ensuring their wishes are respected and that they can remain at home, surrounded by the people they love.
Working Out of Hours also gives me a healthy work–life balance, allowing me to be there for my children during the day, which is something I really value.”
If you’re looking for a nursing role that offers flexibility, autonomy, and meaningful patient care then join our Out of Hours team. We’re currently looking to recruit a Band 6 Sister / Charge Nurse on a 30 hours per week permanent contract.

Cyril joined us in September and started his new role the following month! We caught up with him to hear how his first few weeks have been.
“I’ve recently joined the NCA as a Health Care Assistant at the Wigan Kidney Care Centre. After a few years as a Healthcare Support Worker, this is my first Band 3 role - and I’m loving the chance to use my Care Certificate and take on more responsibility!
Renal haemodialysis is completely new to me, but my manager Julie has been so supportive and really believes in my potential. The whole team has been amazing too – especially Sister Molly, who’s gone above and beyond to help me settle in. I’m proud to be part of the NCA and live by the quote: ‘When you AIM, ensure you pe*****te the sky, so that even if you fall, you will be among the STARS.’”
We’re thrilled to see Cyril thriving and making such a positive start with his team!

If night shifts or out-of-hours work fit better around your life, we’d love for you to apply to join our Out of Hours (OOH) District Nursing team in Rochdale.
As part of the team, you’ll provide compassionate care to patients with a range of needs, including end-of-life and complex care. You’ll also support and mentor junior staff, bringing your experience and calm presence to those quieter, crucial hours.
Tom, specialist practitioner, shared his recent experience of joining the service: “I moved to the OOH team in 2024 and I'm really glad I did. The service appealed to me particularly because of the shift patterns. There seems to be more flexibility than working days – which I never would have thought! It can feel quite daunting working in the community as you’re primarily a lone worker, but I found OOH to be different. You’re normally partnered up with a colleague, and extra support is always just a phone call away. There’s also a lot of autonomy, and you continue to get the satisfaction of implementing your own treatment plans and reviewing care plans.”
If you would like to join Tom as a Sister / Charge Nurse, then come and apply to our recent OOH vacancy.
We’re seeking a registered nurse with relevant community experience, and a desire to work part-time shifts. Advert link in comments.

🏆 A moment for our award winners…
Last month, colleagues at the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust (NCA) proudly took home the Partnership Working Award at the annual HPMA Excellence in People Awards in Birmingham. 🎉
The award celebrates the impressive collaboration between trade unions, HR, equality, equity and inclusion, managers, and colleagues, who worked together to create a new person-centred, holistic Wellbeing and Attendance Management Policy for the NCA.
Sharon Lord, health and wellbeing lead, said: “A wide range of colleagues worked closely together over 2 years and were committed to creating a culture change and a compassionate approach around how we manage sickness and most importantly how we focus on wellbeing and improve how we support each other through challenging times. It was a very proud moment and an honour to be acknowledged by the HPMA.”
This national recognition is both a celebration of the teams involved and an inspiration to continue shaping a compassionate organisational culture at the NCA.
