This , we’re celebrating the people and projects helping us build a more sustainable future across the Northern Care Alliance (NCA) 🌍♻️

Did you know our sites across the NCA support scrap metal recovery initiatives? Our waste team works hard to ensure that decommissioned equipment and materials from infrastructure upgrades are responsibly recycled and reprocessed - reducing waste, cutting carbon emissions and generating funds that can be reinvested into patient care.

Sustainability isn’t just about what happens in our hospitals, it’s about the impact we make as an organisation, employer and community partner.

Let’s re-cap our recruitment figures for February!

✅ 100% of new starters rated recruitment support as ‘excellent’ or ‘good’ for the third month running!

We’re proud to share that our time to hire has reached a record low, with an average of just under 15 days from conditional offer to confirmed start date. This means all successful candidates (across all professions) have been able to secure a start date within just three weeks of their interview. 🤩

💬 One health care assistant told us: “I found the recruitment team to be professional, efficient, and supportive throughout the entire process. Communication was clear and timely, and I was kept informed at every stage of my application and pre-employment checks.”

Record Breaking Recruitment Success! 🌟

Resourcing Administrator Poman Chan and Senior Resourcing Officer Sharron Entwistle have set new recruitment records by securing confirmed start dates within two hours of issuing offer letters.

Poman supports our highvolume nursing and midwifery recruitment pipeline, while Sharron leads on estates and facilities recruitment. Both areas are fastpaced and complex, yet the team continue to deliver exceptional results.

During their introduction calls, Poman and Sharron were able to agree start dates immediately and clearly guide candidates through the next steps of the recruitment process.

For context:
📌 The average time to book a start date at the NCA is 13.5 days
📌 Nationally across the NHS, it is 27 days

Sharron confirmed a start date in just 58 minutes, and Poman was able to fast track a start date for his candidate so they could begin in role 2 weeks after their interview date!

Achieving this in under a day is an outstanding accomplishment and reflects the team’s commitment to providing a smooth, efficient experience for candidates and hiring managers.

A fantastic achievement and a testament to the dedication and service excellence across our resourcing team. Well done both! 👏

Kindness goes a long way 💛

This week, our Recruitment team have been celebrating Random Acts of Kindness through small gestures, supportive teamwork, and simple acts that make a big difference. From lending a hand during busy days to sharing encouraging words (and even a few sweet treats!) the team has shown how powerful kindness can be in the workplace.

These moments aren’t just feel-good extras, they’re part of what helps us deliver great service, collaborate effectively and continually improve the way we work. By supporting each other, we strengthen our culture, fuel our targets and enhance the experience we provide to every candidate, colleague and hiring manager.

That teamwork is what makes us the quickest in Greater Manchester, progressing each vacancy from advert to application and guiding candidates efficiently through to checks complete. When we work together, we achieve more.

Growing Our Leaders: Isma’s Apprenticeship Journey ✨

Here at the NCA, we are committed to growing confident, adaptable leaders at every level.

Our leadership apprenticeships provide unique development opportunities that equip colleagues with the skills to lead through change and shape the future of healthcare.

Isma, a patient pathway coordinator in gastroenterology, recently completed the NCA Frontline Leadership Level 3 Apprenticeship to strengthen her decision‑making and strategic thinking.

Over the 16‑month programme, she developed practical tools to motivate teams, navigate complex challenges, and shift from a reactive to a proactive leadership style.

Reflecting on her experience, Isma said: “This apprenticeship has given me new confidence. I feel like I have increased my self-awareness, can manage differing opinions professionally, and lead with greater confidence. I feel ready to take on any challenge or change.”

Now looking ahead to mentoring and coaching others, Isma’s journey highlights how our internal apprenticeships are growing leaders for the future.

Rebecca's NHS journey highlights the powerful impact apprenticeships can have.

Beginning her career as a ward clerk, Rebecca didn't anticipate how far she could progress until she signed up for a business administration apprenticeship and grew confidence, skills and belief in her own potential.

Since completing her apprenticeship, Rebecca has obtained two promotions at the NCA and now works in a managerial operations role, leading services across rheumatology, theatres, day surgery, outpatients and the Programmed Investigation Unit (PlU).

She said: "The apprenticeship has given me a strong platform for long-term career development. Over the past twelve months I have taken on increased responsibility, including managing my own workload, supporting colleagues, and contributing more actively to team and wider objectives. Looking back, I can honestly say that my apprenticeship opened doors I never knew were there and I'm excited to continue my learning journey by undertaking a leadership apprenticeship with the NCA."

✅ 100% of new starters rated recruitment support as ‘excellent’ or ‘good’ for the second month running

💬 One health care assistant told us: “I really appreciated how supportive and approachable the recruitment team were throughout the process. Working in a hospital environment can be demanding, so it meant a lot that they understood the nature of the role and communicated clearly at every stage.”

We were excited to get back on the road last week and join Salford University students at their AHP Employer Engagement Event.

We always value the opportunity to attend these events and support students as they make important decisions about future pathways and career choices.

Next week, we’ll be heading to the University of Lancashire for a Speech and Language Therapy Careers Fair - so watch out for our stall if you’re currently studying in Preston!

Today, we’re proud to recognise World Cancer Day and the incredible contributions of our Macmillan Information and Support teams 💚

Through recent service expansions, including a new centre at Royal Oldham Hospital, dedicated space at Rochdale Infirmary, and welcoming centres at Salford Royal Hospital and The Christie at Salford, our Macmillan colleagues have increased the support available to patients, families and staff undergoing cancer care and treatment.

These developments have also driven the creation and recruitment of additional roles, including a Macmillan information and support assistant, helping to grow the team and extend the reach of this vital support for people affected by cancer.

Sarah Plant, Macmillan information and support deputy manager, said: “The Macmillan Information and Support services bring an exceptional mix of expertise, compassion and practical problem-solving, alongside a wealth of knowledge about local services.

Opening the Macmillan spaces across our sites has transformed how the team works, giving them a visible, dedicated environment to support patients and families. It has also strengthened the team itself, enabling us to attract and recruit more skilled staff who are passionate about delivering outstanding cancer support.”

Could a career as a clinical nurse specialist in endocrinology be right for you? Meet Rebecca, who currently works in the role and makes a real difference supporting patients with complex chronic conditions.

“As a clinical nurse specialist in endocrinology, my role is varied and rewarding. I run specialist clinics, respond to patient queries and follow up care, including reviewing blood results and co-ordinating with the wider multidisciplinary team. I also provide diagnostic endocrine testing and work autonomously or with consultant support when needed.

Before specialising, I worked in various acute services, including A&E, intensive care (ICU), gynaecology, respiratory and hepatology. This broad clinical background helped my application stand out and ultimately prepared me for the independence and complexity of becoming a clinical nurse specialist.

In my role I have been able to progress from a band 6 to a band 7 through structured training, shadowing and developing specialist skills in line with the Society for Endocrinology framework.

I would recommend this job to anyone who has the knowledge and skills to work autonomously. You don’t need to have worked as an endocrine nurse before but having lots of experience caring for patients with acute and chronic conditions is a major plus.

Looking for a great opportunity to develop your career? We’re currently seeking a nurse to join our Band 6 to Band 7 development pathway to become a clinical nurse specialist in endocrinology.
