In our busy, high-performance world, finding ways to support both our physical recovery and mental resilience is more important than ever.
One powerful, scientifically supported method that’s gaining popularity is floatation therapy — also known as sensory deprivation or floating in a specially designed tank filled with Epsom salt-laden water.
But how exactly does floating work, and what does science say about its benefits? Let’s dive in.
Check out our Blog link below to learn more about how floatation can help you...

SUNDAY YIN YOGA AND YOGA NIDRA AT ALTUS:
This Sunday (25th May) is our monthly Yin Yoga and Yoga Nidra class, with Erin.
Yin Yoga is restorative and slow, it is a chance to pause, soothe the mind and calm the nervous system. It releases stress and tension, often held around our joints (hips and shoulders) that can be a blockage and build up of emotional energy and stress.
Using the breath and moving the body into poses with ease and comfort we release this build up and unblock the flow of energy (prana) around the body.
We then lead into a guided Yoga Nidra session, also known as a Yogic Sleep, allowing the physical body completely rest 'sleep' whilst we remain present. This is a deeply rejuvenative practice, which can be a tool to repattern and train the mind into creating new habits and intentions. You do this by intentionally focusing on a Sankulpa (a mantra or intention, in the present) and due to your brain being in a theta state (slower brain waves) you are capable of change and can move beyond old patterns of behaviour and negative habits or traits (called samskaras in Sanskrit) through the power of intention, or directed focus.
We provide all the equipment (yoga mats, blankets and bolsters), you don't need Yoga experience, just come along and be prepared to relax and let go.

2017 had been quite a year, I'd changed career from being a secondary maths teacher to leaving the profession completely and working in the insurance industry. We bought our first house and I was juggling commuting into London every day with riding and competing two horses and spending time with my family (including my 2 year old daughter). As the year drew to a close I had this nagging and overwhelming feeling that there was more to life than I was currently experiencing, I felt foggy and stuck in the grind of daily life. I was doing a lot, but nothing, all at the same time.
For the new year in 2018, I decided to set myself some goals. I had personal, financial, horse riding and running fitness/health goals. I wanted some focus and clarity in my life, I decided to take control of the things in my life that I was able to and effect change.
The one goal that really took off and became my main focus was running. I'd picked the distance of 10km and a goal of running it in under 50 minutes. That was my short term goal, I had a longer-term goal (you've got to dream big) and set to work. By September 2018 I had managed a time under 41 minutes and had lost 10kg in weight. A year on in September 2019 I set a PB of 37 minutes 48 seconds. An elite time for a female in the 10k.
I learnt a lot in that time, in my journey to becoming a competitive runner. I learnt about motivation, discipline and commitment. I learnt about pushing myself and overcoming my fear of failure. It led me to research different areas of life where I kept seeing connections - patterns emerging - that promoted and nurtured peak performance. In a nutshell, this encompassed purposeful practice, stepping away from comfort (hormesis) and being mindful about what you consume (knowledge, food, skin products etc.) and are exposed to (negativity, toxins and chronic stress).
I learnt about bio-hacking, practising methods such as intermittent fasting, avoiding blue light, improving my sleep, avoiding toxic food, filtering the water I drink, meditating and reaching the brain state known as 'flow' or 'in the zone' where we perform at our best in a clear, focused and completely present way.
The year 2020 probably hasn't been what anybody had planned for. There have been many factors that have been out of our control due to the coronavirus. We can however control how we respond and react to our environment, we have a choice there. For me, 2020 has given me time to think and envisage a new venture. I want to become more involved in optimal health and performance and share the passion I have for it, thus Altus was born.
My aim is for Altus to be a centre and a community for like-minded positive people to use resources, ideas, practices, tools and exercises to help them to reach their personal goals: mind, body and spirit.
