Growth syndrome - love this new perspective on imposter syndrome from Steven Bartlett

IMPOSTER SYNDROME ISN'T INCAPABILITY, IT'S INEXPERIENCE... understanding this difference changed my life👇🏾

5 years ago today, at 27 years old the BBC called me and asked:

"Do you want to become a Dragon on Dragon's Den".

I was shocked. But I said, Yes.

To me it’s not just an iconic show, it’s a culturally, economically and entrepreneurially important one.

I was 28 when I entered the Den.

About to sit in a chair I'd role-played myself in since I was 12.

To my left: Peter Jones. There since episode one, 2005.

To my right: Deborah Meaden. 19 years in that seat.

Producer counts down: "30 seconds until the first entrepreneur."

My hands are sweating?! Heart thumping in my ears!

Not because I couldn't evaluate businesses. I'd built and sold companies and made investments - in fact my first ever investment was into a young Hyrum Cook for an idea he pitched me pre-launch called Adanola.

But I'd never done it with cameras rolling and millions watching.

For 15 years, I'd watched from my parents' sofa.
Paused the TV as a child to give my verdict before the Dragons.

Played businessman in my living room.

Now I was.... inside the TV. In the actual Den.

The lights really hot. The chair stiffer than expected and the silence before that lift opens, deafening.

Here's what I learnt:

Imposter syndrome isn't about incapability. It's about inexperience.

Your brain literally can't tell the difference between: "I've never done this" and "I can't do this"

Same signal. Same fear. Completely different realities.

First entrepreneur walks in. Pitches. The Dragons turn to me.

My mind goes blank for exactly one second.

Then muscle memory kicks in.

"Your customer acquisition costs across social media is 3x your lifetime value," I hear myself saying. "How do you fix that?"

Peter nods. Deborah builds on my point.

I belonged there. I just hadn't belonged there before.

One pitch in, the nerves are gone. 10 pitches in and I forgot the cameras, 50 pitches in and that chair felt comfortable, 500 pitches later - I'm having fun, experimenting, pushing boundaries a little.

And the thing is, Imposter syndrome hits the hardest when you're doing something that really matters - that you really care about. When you're exactly where you should be. When you're growing!

That's why I call imposter syndrome, "growth syndrome" - who would choose a life without that?

I wasn't an imposter. I was a 28-year-old who'd never been a Dragon before.

And, it turns out that's exactly what they wanted - someone who was a bit naive, inexperienced - different.

The lack of experience is not the problem,
but it always holds an advantage - that's what you focus on.

To everyone facing their own Dragon's Den moment, please remember this:

You belong in every room you're brave enough to enter and the room that intimidates you most is the one that needs your perspective the most!

The very least you can do in your life is figure out what you hope for...
And the most you can do is live inside that hope.
Not admire it from a distance but live right in it, under its roof

And that makes for a life well lived

For a while now it has been recognised that our genes are not 'set', they can be turned on and off through outside factors and internal conscious intention. Thus I am totally in tune with this understanding that our DNA also acts as a receiver and transmitter into the field. Sad that 'proof' gets hidden so it can be buried in the land of mumbo jumbo rather than growing the consiousness of humanity.

On October 2019, a controversial idea surfaced at the edge of biophysics: DNA may not simply store genetic information ~ it may receive it. The proposal suggested that DNA behaves like a biological antenna, resonating with Earth’s electromagnetic background and remaining in constant interaction with surrounding fields.

According to accounts tied to the research, isolated DNA fragments responded to external electromagnetic changes even outside the body, stopping instantly when the signal source was removed. Within days of the presentation, the lab was reportedly “closed for renovation.” Research access ended. Publications quietly disappeared.

The implications are unsettling. If DNA responds to fields, biology may be less self-contained than assumed ~ life operating as a tuned system rather than a closed code.

Similar ideas were explored by Nobel laureate Luc Montagnier, who published controversial work describing electromagnetic signals associated with DNA interacting with water:

One surviving line attributed to the vanished research reads:

“If DNA is an antenna, then all living beings are connected through one field. We are not born, we are switched on.”

Suppressed science or misunderstood frontier, the question remains:

What if DNA isn’t just inherited code, but a signal you’re always receiving?

Transformation can happen at any moment.
As I walked into the garden I saw this dragonfly being bounced on a fern by the wind.

Dragonflies are about transformation. In that moment I chose to stop and recognise that quality in its being. Right there and then my thoughts transformed from the mundane to beauty and looking around for what else was magical in my garden.

Instead of immediately looking at the laptop I had brought down with me, I saw the butterflies, for they too are transformational.

My heart is now more open, and my senses more aware and what I do on that laptop will have a different quality to it than if I had not allowed the beauty offered to me in that moment to be transformational.

Wherever possible surround yourself with objects which will open your heart as you work and feel the difference.

What are our pets here to teach us?

Unconditional love.
Love not conditional on their being here either. Pets lives are so much shorter than our own, so we learn to love unconditionally and then learn to be with the grief and the space their passing leaves.

So what does that show us? It shows us that we CAN be with it all. And we become stronger, more resilient and rounded as a result.

My wonderful Labrador Lulu passed a year ago this week aged 16. I miss her on every walk I ever take, but I also know she's with me. Not in every step, but in every heartbeat. Because every time I sense something with my heart open, whether that's another human, a flower, or a sunset, I can allow it to touch that sacred space inside of me where love resides. In that space nothing comes or goes - it just holds the space for all I experience. Lulu expanded the capacity of my heart to love in ways only a pet can. Her passing has taught me about grief and my capacity to remain connected to her wider form of love beyond the grave.

If you can meet the grief in your heart, your pet will always be with you in spirit.
Her heart was as wide as some of those sticks she tried to carry...

For the day, the moment, perhaps lifetime when you question "am I good enough"?

UPON REFLECTION
You say that I am enough
in your self-help books,
your mindfulness podcasts,
and those team events
where everybody claps everybody else.
Like everyone’s a winner.

Like we aren’t competing
with each other again tomorrow.
Like we aren’t competing
with all those commercials
which state that we desperately need
to add this or that
to even come close to being enough.
To make ourselves worthy
of anyone’s attention.

So how am I to believe it?
What can you honestly say
that might make me feel ‘enough’?
Worthy of even being in the room
with this lump in my throat with
“I don’t know what to say”
filling the pregnant pause
of my low self-esteem.

The mirror looked back at me.
It wasn’t impressed by my mind’s unworthiness.
It just couldn’t see it.
My true reflection is what it was here to show.

In bearing witness, my mind reflected
and my thoughts stilled.
For me to see ‘me’ they weren’t needed.
I just needed to open my eyes.
And there I was.
As worthy as the day I was born.

I witnessed the miracle of life looking back at me.
Consciousness wrapped in a body
so miraculous nothing on earth
could explain the perfection
of this organism.
My organism, housing me
worthy of that existence
just as I AM.

What grace put me here
I do not know.
I only know that to call myself anything less than
‘enough’
would be to close my eyes
on all that is so evidently ‘staring me in the face’
and make up some ridiculous story
around a perception
called unworthiness.

Based on fiction, not a reflection,
of the incredible character standing in front of me.
