Still can’t quite believe I’m on BBC (!!) 😅

I was interviewed for BBC News about drinking warm water, something I’ve grown up with in Singapore and still turn to for comfort today.

For me, it’s always felt natural and soothing… but it’s also a good reminder that comfort and culture aren’t always the same as science.

Both can coexist. We can honour what feels good to us while also being curious about what the evidence actually says.

A little surreal seeing myself on screen but very grateful to be part of the conversation 💦💦💦

Happiness, to me, is creating a space where health feels empowering, engaging and even a little fun 💜

This International Happiness Day, I’m celebrating the journey of building my lifestyle clinic which is filled with the “toys” I never got to use in a standard GP setting. Grip strength testing, step fitness, heart tracing, advanced body composition scales… and so much more.

Because happiness isn’t just a feeling. It’s investing in your wellbeing, understanding your body and making health something you actually enjoy. ✨

It’s easy to avoid the numbers that scare us.

But early numbers give us options.

In my lifestyle clinic, I don’t wait for heart attacks or diabetes diagnoses.
I look for early warning signs such as high blood pressure, raised cholesterol, blood sugar changes and act before complications develop.

Prevention is calmer than cure.
And far more powerful.

If you’re ready to understand your numbers and take control of your long-term health, my lifestyle clinic is here to help 💜

Do you recognise what this is?

This tiny coil isn’t just for contraception. It does so much more.

As a doctor with a special interest in women’s health, I fit Mirena coils regularly not just for birth control but as a treatment. And pain relief is always offered because coil fittings shouldn’t be something you just have to “put up with.”

The Mirena can:

👉🏽 Treat heavy bleeding

👉🏽 Reduce painful periods

👉🏽 Be used as part of HRT to protect the womb lining

For many perimenopausal women, it can be a real game-changer covering all those bases.

It’s amazing how something so small can do such wonderful things.

New research shows menopause is linked to changes in the brain alongside poorer sleep and mental health. That might sound scary… but here’s the encouraging bit: HRT appears to slow the drop in reaction times that can happen with ageing and menopause.

In real life, slower reaction times look like:
• struggling to concentrate
• feeling mentally slower than you used to
• losing confidence at work
• that frustrating “brain fog”

As a doctor, I see this all the time especially in capable, high-achieving women who suddenly feel like their brain isn’t keeping up with them. And many worry it’s just them.

It’s not.

HRT isn’t for everyone. And as a lifestyle doctor, I’ll always emphasise that sleep, stress management, nutrition, movement and good sleep hygiene are foundational for brain health in menopause. But evidence that HRT may put the brakes on cognitive slowing is genuinely hopeful.

If this resonates, please know you’re not alone 🧠🧠🧠
And it’s worth having a proper, evidence-based conversation about your options.

This morning my daughter looked at me and said,

“Mummy, you look so strong.”

Not slim.
Not thin.
Not pretty.

Strong.

And honestly, it stopped me in my tracks.

I grew up in a culture where especially for girls, our worth was so often measured by our size. Food was something to earn, restrict, feel guilty about. Strength wasn’t really part of the conversation.

Now, as a mother raising a daughter (and two sons who are very much part of this), I’m so conscious of rewriting that script.

We talk about food as fuel, something that helps our bodies run, grow, play, think and rest. We talk about what our bodies can do, not how they look. We celebrate energy, resilience, capability and yes… strength.

Because I want my children to grow up measuring themselves by how powerful they feel in their bodies, not how they look.

Today, hearing my daughter reflect back a value I’m trying so hard to live by reminded me that these small, everyday conversations matter.

Here’s to raising daughters who know their bodies are tools, not ornaments.

And to choosing strength, again and again, over size. 💪🏽

Blood test day 💉🩸💉🩸

I wanted to share this little clip of something that gives me a bit of anxiety every year - my annual blood test for diabetes.

Because I had gestational diabetes during pregnancy, I make sure to get my blood sugar checked annually. The test itself is super simple. It’s just a small sample that can tell you so much about your health. It checks things like your blood sugar and cholesterol, helping to spot early signs of problems before they start.

Honestly, it’s not the test that worries me. It’s waiting for the results! 😅 But it’s so worth it for that peace of mind.

So if you’ve been putting off your routine blood test, here’s your reminder: it’s quick, easy and gives you valuable info to take charge of your health. 💪🏽

💡 When should you think about getting a diabetes blood test?

You should consider testing if:

✅ You’ve had gestational diabetes (like me!)
✅ You have a family history of diabetes
✅ You’re over 40 (or over 25 and from an ethnic minority background)
✅ You’re overweight or not very active
✅ You have high blood pressure or high cholesterol
✅ You’ve noticed symptoms like increased thirst, frequent urination, tiredness or blurred vision

Even if you feel well but are at risk of diabetes, it’s worth checking as early detection makes a huge difference.

🩸 Know your numbers. Take charge of your health. Your wellbeing is worth those few minutes.

If you’re concerned about your risk or would like to get tested, contact De Helen Medical to speak to one of us. We are here to help with any questions or to arrange a simple blood test.
