🌎 OPENING SPEAKER REVEAL 🌍

With only 8 more days to go until our CamWHO 2021 simulation conference, we hope you are as excited about our expert speakers as we are! Introducing our first speaker:

*Dr Richard Hixson*
Consultant in Critical Care, County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, Founder & CEO of Golden-Haze Ltd, Co-founder of NHS Ocean

Dr Richard Hixson is the Trust’s Clinical Lead for Sustainability on the Northeast ‘ICS’ Group, a Trustee of the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare, a healthcare sustainability advisor to Durham County Council, and member of NHS England’s Sustainable Procurement Forum.

He co-founded NHS Ocean due to his main interests being Global Goal 14, Life Below Water, and how human activities such as healthcare procurement and container shipping adversely affected the marine environment. His goals are to ensure that oceans, coasts and inland waterways are actively included in the NHS net zero planning and to remind everyone that the planet needs to be looked after as carefully as every patient.

We are looking forward to hearing from him!

Why do Universities play an important role in ensuring access to medical technologies for all?

"🔬Universities, because they are upstream in the development pipeline, are likely to hold rights to the key components of a wide variety of end products.

💊Universities acting collectively have a strong negotiating position with respect to other players in the biomedical research arena."

We believe that the University of Cambridge has a responsibility to its students, local community, and the globe to contribute to ending the pandemic by ensuring the products of its research are accessible to all.

In this Open Letter we call on the University to commit to socially responsible licensing, as well as improve its transparency and accountability surrounding the process of licensing medicines to the companies that manufacture them. This would prevent pandemic-related health technology from being licensed with ‘no strings attached’ to big pharmaceutical companies that might restrict access and raise prices to generate profit. The Cambridge based DIOSynvax just received 1.9 million pounds to begin clinical trials of their developed vaccine. Will their vaccine be accessible globally if it is successful?

Approximately 1 in 3 people worldwide lack access to essential medicines, even though many of the most innovative and life-saving medicines that exist today were originally developed in university laboratories using taxpayer funding.

We firmly believe that COVID-19 diagnostics, therapeutics, and health technologies developed at the University of Cambridge should be made accessible and affordable to everyone worldwide, regardless of socio-economic status or country of residence.
