Nurture is preventative medicine to create mental wellness

When we understand babies and take part in their positive emotions and distress we shape their developing brain towards lifelong nervous system health.

Nurture shapes every brain area involved in lifelong mental health towards regulation and resilience.

The HPA axis- hippocampus, amygdala, hypothalamus prefrontal cortex- to build a regulated stress system and nervous system

Neurotransmitter systems - serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, GABA, glutamate - to build resilient circuits for mood and reward

Microbiota in the gut - to influence resilient mood

Cortex - to build thinking / cognitive circuitry

Our babies can have lives with mental wellness, physical health, nourishing relationships and fulfilling curiosity.

These are such important messages that need to get out there.

Everywhere.

Infant mental health (how an infant feels about themselves, others and the world) is a thing. The foundations for mental health and wellbeing are laid in the early years.

Infant mental health becomes toddler mental health.
Toddler mental health becomes the child's mental health.
The child's mental health becomes the teenager's mental health.
The teen's mental health becomes the adult's mental health.

And the foundations are laid in infancy.

Mental health is a thing for adults, and it begins in infancy. Nurturing, responsive, tuned in caregiving that understands the necessity of adult help due to the immature, underdeveloped thinking part of the young brain is vital to providing the kind of caregiving that little ones need to thrive.

🔴 Perfect parenting doesn't exist. No one does this well every time. But the understanding of it can still be there.

We need to spread the word. 📢

Babies, especially newborns, cry so much when they are very young. It doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong - crying is one of the main ways babies communicate their needs early on.

When you hold your baby, especially skin-to-skin, her body temperature depends on you. The warmth of a mother’s breasts are naturally modulated to keep her baby at the perfect temperature promoting restful sleep, optimal oxygen saturation, and saving her baby the energy it takes to stay warm. This redirects valuable calories into more critical things like growth.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Breast temperature can rise and fall rapidly as your baby is warmed. As your baby starts to cool, your breasts heat up again, by as much as 2 degrees celsius in two minutes.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So, cuddle your baby if she has a fever and you'll cool her down. Wear your baby and keep her at the perfect temperature when it’s cold outside. And sleep with your baby keeping her warm and snug in the wee small hours of the morning.

Society tells us that picking up a baby "too much" will spoil them. Here's how science and cross-cultural evidence shows that the opposite is true.

Neuroscientists have long known that shut-eye helps consolidate memories in adults. Napping may play an equally crucial role in infants and young children.

Framlingham Town Council have a notice board! Local craftsman Jonathan Read of Saxtead made the hardwood construction and Cllr Jones painted it. We think it looks great!

On all of our IAIM courses, our instructors demonstrate the strokes using demonstrate dolls, to guide parents through the programme. They will never massage your baby, however many you may have!

We know that parents are the experts of their babies and that it's the closeness and connection from their parents that babies seek. Our programme supports and promotes bonding and attachment 💜

It’s such a brave thing to share your story in the hopes no other family have to go through what you went through, and this week we hear from Tilly, mum of 15 month old Hallie who suffered horrible burns after having an accident with a hot cup of tea.

It’s hard to believe something that is such a simple part of most of our morning routines, a hot cuppa, can cause so much devastation.

We’d like to thank Tilly for allowing us to share her story. ❤️
