The Bakery Of Slow Ideas is a day-long platform for communal dialogue, action and rest. A temporary nomadic bakery where listening and gentle creativity are prioritised, exchange is encouraged and everyone makes a loaf of their very own ancient grain sourdough bread. It offers a playful and empowering facilitated space for people to get together, slow down and envisage positive alternative futures.

During this special bakery for healthcare workers The Quadrangle] we will be exploring what nourishes us and thinking about connections between our personal health and ecological health. The day is open to all healthcare workers who feel the need to rest, digest and to process the impact that the last two years has had on them.

The Bakery of Slow Ideas has taken place all over the UK and Europe with a wide range of different groups. It was conceived of and created by the artist Leo Kay and is facilitated by Leo and his collaborator Anna Smith, together they are Unfinished Business: thisisunfinished.com.

This day is supported by the Farming in Protected Landscapes Programme in collaboration with Kent

Refreshments, lunch and all baking materials are provided.

I felt someone UNDERSTANDS our struggle 🧡

Our day to day lives may have returned to some form of 'normal' since freedom day, but this pandemic will have lasting effects, particularly for those working on the frontline.

Our mission at Out in the Filed NHS is to give a practical and direct Thank You to the frontline NHS staff.
We hear you, we care and want to help!

Thank you to Maria Navarro Rio for letting us share her feedback from one of our retreats.

The pandemic has made us so much more aware of SPACE.

The two metre distance we maintained, the houses we were confined to and for those working on the frontline, the lack of space to provide care for those in need.

Our recovery retreats are designed to give space and time to those that have held us together this past year, putting themselves at risk, pioneering treatments and being there for loved ones when we couldn't be.

We're currently setting up at ready to welcome more NHS frontline staff 💚

POSITIVE FEEDBACK 👍

Out in the field NHS was set up to have both an immediate and long term impact for frontline NHS workers, offering a moment to pause and learn techniques for returning to work.

"It is an excellent way of actually building true resilience and improving our mental health and wellbeing in these challenging times, I would urge every member of the NHS workforce to take this type of course" Dr Trivedy, BDS FCS RCS (Eng) MBBS PHD FRCEM FRGS, Brighton and Sussex University Hospital

We're always pleased to hear that the retreats are achieving what we set out to do!

Prescribing vitamin N 🌿

Our mission here at Out In The Field was to design retreats that gave back to frontline NHS staff through time in nature, giving them a chance to reconnect with themselves and improve their wellbeing.

The retreats include:

🙏Yoga
🧘Meditation
🌊Wild swimming
🍎Organic food
🔥Campfires

We can't wait to continue our mission with the next weekend retreat in September.

WE NEED CARE TOO 💙

I’m sure many NHS staff can relate to Emily’s story of being redeployed from her role as a paediatric doctor to COVID ICU.

Emily Mills attended our July retreat following her work in the ICU during the 1st lockdown and worked with children with COVID at Great Ormond Street in the 2nd lockdown:

"I think these retreats should be provided for all NHS staff. I strongly believe that nature retreats are the best way to slow down our stressed, overworked minds and bodies, to get us to release some of our held trauma and to realise how we can cope better in our day to day lives. I think these retreats are the most effective thing that can be done to tackle the retention crisis and keep staff in their jobs. We want to dedicate our lives to caring for others, but we need care too.”

We’re back online continuing to support frontline staff🌈

Following the success of the crowdfunding campaign and running our first weekend retreat, we took some time away to recharge, ready to come back and support those that have given us so much over the pandemic.

We’d like to thank everyone that donated and offered their support to our campaign. The 1st retreat with so many frontline workers reminded us just how much they’ve been through and how important having time and space to reflect was vital to their wellbeing 💚

However, our work is not done, with more retreats lined up and feedback to share.

For now, love from Out in the field NHS x

A huge THANK YOU to everyone that donated and supported our crowdfunder 💙

We’re pleased to report we hit beyond the £12,500 target, giving us the opportunity to support many frontline NHS workers at our one and two day nature retreats. The first of which took place this weekend with positive feedback.

If you’d like to join a retreat, nominate a NHS worker or offer any further support please get in touch with the team

⏰There’s only 24 hours of our fundraiser left!

We’re so close to reaching our £12,500 target to support nearly 100 frontline NHS staff through nature recovery and mindfulness programmes.

The retreats will help restore frontliners health and wellbeing by introducing simple tools and practices that help regulate stress and anxiety with the aim to build a sense of wellbeing and resilience when they return to their everyday lives.

Through our successful pilot tests with NHS staff we see we are meeting a need. We have lined up our team and are all ready to go!

Any donations you can spare will be giving back to those who have given more than most during the pandemic 💙 https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/out-in-the-field---restorative-retreats-nhs

Out in the field is a direct and practical Thank You to frontline staff. The supportive comments left on our fundraiser show many feel the time to give back to the NHS is now:

💙Hoping this gives time to reflect and enable you the peace and space to move forward. Thank you for your resilience and fortitude.

🌈Thanks for all the care you have given to those in need, not just recently but always.

💙Many of my colleagues will never be the same again following this pandemic. What a wonderful step out of reality it will be for some of them..wonderful!

🌈As an NHS worker who benefitted from some similar free events in Devon (funded by the lottery) I wanted to pass on some of my gratitude by helping other NHS workers in Kent have a similar experience. Wonderful thing the Quadrangle are doing!

💙Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the wonderful work you do.

🌈Thanks to all the NHS staff who have been so critical for so many people.

💙I'm so pleased to be able to support this wonderful initiative and to offer my thanks to all NHS workers for their dedication and tireless efforts.

🌈Have been so grateful for the selflessness of NHS workers and the sacrifices they have made for us in the last 15 months. Hope this retreat gives them some over due rest.

💙So important. So needed. Thank you for creating this campaign I hope more care workers can get the love and support they need from nature to process and restore. ###
