Group B Strep (GBS) is a common and usually harmless bacteria carried by many adults. But during childbirth, it can sometimes cause infections in newborns.
In the UK, routine testing isn’t offered due to the bacteria being transient. GBS can sometimes be picked up if you were to have a high vaginal swab taken for another concern during pregnancy

Let’s talk Anti-D 🩸 It’s important to consider the benefits and positives – it helps prevent serious complications for both mum and baby. Remember, it's a blood product, so take that into consideration when deciding whether to accept or decline it. Knowledge is power!

🔍 Fetal Scalp Electrode (FSE) – what’s it all about? 🤔

If you're planning for a birth and want to know more about your options for monitoring your baby’s heart rate during labour, the FSE might come up. While it’s not for everyone, it can provide more accurate readings when external monitors aren’t doing the job. And the best part? It can help you move around more freely during labour 🙌

But like any medical tool, it has pros and cons, so it’s worth having a chat with your healthcare team to see if it’s right for you. 💬👶

Have you considered an FSE during your birth plan? Drop your thoughts or questions below! 👇

🌳 What Is the Placenta?
The placenta is a temporary organ that develops in the uterus during pregnancy. It plays a vital role in supporting the growing fetus and maintaining a healthy pregnancy.

What Does the Placenta Do?
The placenta acts as a lifeline between the mother and the baby. Its main functions include:

Nutrient and Oxygen Transfer: Delivers oxygen and nutrients (like glucose, amino acids) from the mother’s blood to the fetus.

Waste Removal: Removes waste products (like carbon dioxide and urea) from the fetal blood to the mother’s system.

Hormone Production:
Produces hCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin) to maintain pregnancy
Oestrogen and progesterone to support the uterine lining and prevent contractions

Immune Protection: Acts as a selective barrier to protect the fetus from infections and harmful substances (though some can still cross).

Gas Exchange: Facilitates the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between maternal and fetal blood

🧬 Components of the Placenta
Maternal Side:
Originates from the mother’s uterine lining.
Appears rough and red due to maternal blood supply

Fetal Side (Chorionic Plate):
Smooth, shiny surface with visible blood vessels from the umbilical cord.
Derived from the outer layer of the embryo.

Umbilical Cord:
Connects fetus to placenta.
Contains two arteries (carry deoxygenated blood away from fetus) and one vein (carries oxygenated blood to fetus)

As a Hypnobirthing teacher, I always remind my clients: the postpartum period is just as important as the birth itself. 🌿 Setting kind, clear boundaries isn’t selfish—it’s supportive. This is your time to bond, rest, and move at your own pace. It’s okay to say ‘not yet’ to visitors, to ask for help, and to protect your space. You get to choose what feels right for you.

Still early in my journey as a midwife, but already so much has changed — in me, and in how I see life. Each birth reminds me of the strength we carry, the power of presence, and the beauty in beginnings. I'm learning, growing, and holding space — with many more years ahead to serve, support, and be humbled by this calling. 💛👶✨

✨ Did you know there are several meaningful things you can do with your placenta after birth? 🌿 Whether it’s encapsulation, planting it with a tree, creating art, or donating for medical research — the choice is deeply personal and symbolic. 💫 Honor your journey, your body, and your baby in a way that feels right for you. 💗
