🌿 Body Story of the Day
A few days ago, I felt a sudden sharp pain in my lower right rib cage.
It was intense — so painful it was hard to breathe or even walk properly.
Of course, like many of us do, I checked online… and my mind quickly went to worry and fear.
Instead of spiralling further, I went to see Alex, a bodyworker in Ventnor.
I didn’t tell him what Google had suggested.
I simply described what I was feeling.
He gently explained that the lowest ribs are partly floating, and sometimes the right rib can slip slightly under the one above, irritating the nerves and creating sharp, breath-catching pain.
He worked with it — calmly, precisely, listening to the body rather than the internet.
And just like that…
✨ breathing felt free again
✨ movement returned
✨ my body felt like mine again
A powerful reminder that not everything dramatic is dangerous — and that skilled, experienced hands can sometimes see what screens cannot.
Listening to the body, and trusting the right support, makes all the difference.

You can find Alex in his clinic in Ventnor .

Dear Open Heart
"Drumming changes you because rhythm reaches places thought never gets to first.
It doesn’t ask what you believe, how you’re feeling, or whether you’re doing it right.
It goes straight to the systems that organize timing, attention, and movement.
That happens long before you have a story about what’s going on.
That’s why people leave a drum circle saying, “I feel different,” and then can’t quite explain why.

What’s changing isn’t your mood.
It’s your internal timing.
When you play a steady rhythm with your hands, your brain and body start locking onto something predictable.
Breath begins to line up.
Movement smooths out.
Attention narrows in a way that feels relieving instead of effortful.
None of that requires insight.
Rhythm works because the nervous system is built to synchronize.
It’s constantly looking for reliable patterns so it knows how much energy to use, how fast to move, and what to ignore.
When it finds a steady beat, a lot of background noise drops out automatically.
This is why you don’t have to try to relax while drumming.

The work is happening underneath that.

Two hands alternating on a drum create a simple, repeating signal.
Left, right.
Contact, release.
Over and over.
That repetition gives the system something it can trust.
When the system trusts the timing, it stops scanning for what’s next.
That’s the shift people feel.
Not catharsis.
Not release.
Organization.
Once things are organized, everything else gets easier.
Focus shows up without effort.
Thoughts slow down on their own.

People often feel calmer after they stop playing because the rhythm has already done its job.
This is also why drumming works for people who are convinced they have no rhythm.
Skill isn’t the entry point.
Participation is.
The body knows what to do with a pulse even when the mind argues otherwise.
Drumming changes you because rhythm gives your system a job it’s good at.
You don’t have to understand it.
You don’t have to believe in it.
You just have to play. "
