A little bit of humour for Thursday

01/08/2023

This afternoon I saw a regular client on zoom (because she’s moved away from Sheffield for her job and can’t see me face to face)
Sarah works from home now, and rarely leaves her house. Waking every morning to use her laptop in her bedroom, look at figures on a screen, and never actually see or talk to anyone. The longer she’s done this the harder its become to get though the door to the world outside. This is what Sarah went to uni to get a degree for..

I work with so many in her position, working for companies who closed offices in ‘Covid’ and never opening them again due of the ever increases cost.

Here’s Sarah’s poem which she’s permitted me to share - prowerful.

My cage is my home ~
My cage is my safety ~
My cage is inviting ~
My cage is a sanctuary ~
My cage is all I know ~

My cage is locked.

I am alone and know no different. I'm afraid.

My cage is a prison.

My cage is my downfall,
My cage is my deathbed,
My cage is my grave,
My cage is just that,
A cage.

Worrying, we know cognitively it solves nothing, so why do we do it?

Because It’s hard for the brain to unlearn old habits. Because part of you believes it’s keeping you safe.

But with strategies, and maybe a chat to that scared part, it is possible to change this habit.

Are you getting in your own way?
Our minds don't like change, they want us to do everything the same, because that's safe, and that 'comfort zone' is safe, even if it's uncomfortable.

That next transition in life no matter how small can sometimes feel like breaking down a brick wall with a toffee hammer. And why wouldn't it.? 'who is that person that achieves their dream?' some parts of us don't know or trust him/her.

We adopt safety behaviours such as 'avoidance' or 'seeking reassurance' that stop us from progressing.
Recognise the cycles that are holding you back.
What are you saying to yourself (eg "perhaps I need more training")
How did that make you feel (eg uncertain, anxious)
What did you do (avoided uncertainty, I didn't apply for the position).

Notice your thoughts and challenge yourself to do something different.
