⭐️ When you get to collaborate with other professionals who are also ADHD and/or autistic, magic really does happen.

⭐️ Badibidu - Art by Cat Regi and I were chatting about the upcoming school events — how they can be exciting, but also quite tricky for many autistic and ADHDers for lots of different reasons.

⭐️ We wanted to create something that celebrates the bravery it takes to join in with new activities, while also recognising how brave and important it is to self-advocate and ask for what you need.

⭐️ After lots of chats and input from others, the Star System was born.

⭐️ This resource is completely free to download from the Badibidu website — we’d love to hear what you think! 🌟

It’s here! ⭐️ The Star System ⭐️ a FREE RESOURCE to support kids building bravery at their own speed.

⭐️ I’ve worked with Becca Hutchinson, experienced OT Peak Potential , fabulous friend, and fellow ND human, to create something focussing on what kids really need to help them feel supported during special school events.

⭐️ We’ve run this idea past senior leadership teams, SENCOs, teachers, therapists, school governors, parents and carers of anxious kiddies for feedback and made changes until we’re happy. We will continue to change it as many times as we need to for as long as we need to, but want to get it out there in time for the Christmas run up!

⭐️ Please share this far and wide, it’s as easy to implement as we can make it, and aimed at all Primary aged education settings. I’m really proud of it and wish I’d had the brain space to create it years ago when my kids desperately needed it.

⭐️ Click the link, download the PDF and send it to teachers and SENCOs far and wide. Tag them. Share with friends. Can we please use our networks and WhatsApp groups and get it out there 😁 Everyone is welcome to email or message me if there are questions hello@badibidu.com

Badibidu centring some important messages in her art.

Progress can be hard to recognise, because sometimes it moves at a glacial pace, and often it doubles back on itself, loop the loops, and points a redirect in one direction and sneaks off in another when you’re not looking.

I was so relieved when during my teeny kids days I was shown the image of a never ending looping circle of doom which when seen from another angle was actually a spiral heading upward. It made so much sense and gave me hope.

It might not always feel like it, but slowly slowly we’re making progress, of some sort, just maybe not exactly where you’re looking.

Hope you like this watercolour, and my version of gorgeous nasturtiums and wildflowers in an ever climbing, rambling display of non-linear progress.

Not going to lie – the news over the last couple of days has been tough to take in.

Like many, I’ve done my own digging – trawling through journal databases and reading a lot – and wasn’t at all surprised to find that my conclusions matched those of the major autism charities here in the UK: there’s no credible evidence of a link between paracetamol use in pregnancy and the child being autistic.

They’ve now released a joint statement on the situation – link below.

Please rest assured: if you’re working with Peak Potential, I stay up to date with the latest research. But let me be clear – I’m not here to “cure” or “prevent” something I see as a natural variation in neurotype.

As a proud AuDHDer, I know that with the right support and environment, we can absolutely thrive. 🌱

Autism Level UP make some of the most perfect resources for all humans, not just us neurodivergent folk. Remember regulated is not the same as calm! It is having the right energy to match the task you need/want to do - this is wisdom I gained from Jac and Amy.

Many Autistic people are not lacking in social skills. Get a bunch of Autistic friends together and watch the magic happen.

Many of us are not lacking in humour or sarcasm. The funniest people I know are Autistic. Our humour may be different to yours.

Many of us have so much empathy that the feelings try to crush us. We might express that empathy differently to you.

We communicate. Our communication style is probably different to yours.

It’s not that we don’t have these skills.
It’s that we do them differently. They look different.

And they’re often unrecognisable to neurotypical folk.

But they are there.

Neuroaffirmative occupational therapy doesn’t just apply in the session. It is about acknowledging the individual and the other aspects of their life. These resources by Neurowild show some examples of how parenting as a neurodivergent individual can be hard. I particularly like the inclusion of information from Dr Ross Greene “parents do well when they can”.

As a neurodivergent parent I have indeed shared many of Em’s resources with school. I also know I need to manage my own sensory regulation in order to be the person I want to be, for me, and my children. I often find this is propriocetive activities that calm my nervous system, but sometimes it’s loud and silly activities to help me feel more energised.

If you are a neurodivergent parent what do you find helpful in managing competing needs?

This principle, of monitoring your battery, is a key element in occupational therapy. To achieve your plans you need to have the energy for it.

What is your favourite way to top up your battery?
