What amazing work the hospice and end of life staff do

Today, we are proud to announce the launch of a new service to help people across Birmingham and Solihull to access specialist end of life and palliative care in their own homes, helping them to stay in familiar surroundings near their loved ones.

The SPUR (Specialist Palliative Urgent Response) service, which goes live today, will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It will take calls from patients and their families, as well as healthcare professionals, and either offer advice, signpost to relevant services, or arrange a home visit within two hours, bringing our expert skills directly into people's homes in times of crisis.

The initiative responds to longstanding gaps in out-of-hours palliative care provision, particularly overnight, where fragmented services have often led to undue stress for families and increased pressure on local emergency departments. The intention is that, by providing a single point of contact, patients and their families will be able to receive the support they need more quickly.

To access the service, from 8am-10pm please contact HoBS (Hospices of Birmingham and Solihull) on 0121 809 1900. Overnight (10pm-8am), please use our dedicated hotline number 0300 555 1919 (select option 2).

It is always a privilege and honour to work with families and support them with their final goodbye to their loved ones. It is always lovely to receive feedback and know that I have been a help and support during the funeral process. Below is some feedback for a scattering service I conducted last month:

β€œA huge, heartfelt thank you to Tracey for making my dad’s final journey so truly perfect. From the very beginning, her care, compassion and attention to detail were exceptional. She took such time and care in putting the eulogy together, describing my dad and his life perfectly β€” it felt like she really understood who he was.

Tracey explained every stage of the process clearly and kept me informed throughout, which meant so much during such a difficult time. I felt genuinely supported from start to finish, and her calm, assured presence helped me feel strong and steady on the day itself.

Knowing I was in such safe hands lifted a huge weight from my shoulders. Tracey even went above and beyond by liaising with the cemetery to ensure the service and the scattering of ashes ran smoothly, allowing me to focus on remembering dad and looking after family and friends rather than worrying about logistics.

I truly can’t recommend Tracey highly enough. Her kindness, professionalism and dedication made this emotional experience feel manageable, meaningful and filled with respect. Thank you again.”

As heavy snow is forecast this week, this may affect cemetery and crematoria operations. In extreme conditions, funerals could be postponed for safety reasons, and sites may close to general visitors.

The first Christmas after you lose someone feels different in every way.

You go through the motions because you have to.
For the kids.
For the family.
For tradition.

But inside, everything feels quieter.

There are moments when the joy feels forced, when memories rise without warning.
The empty spaces feel louder than the music.
And even the simplest traditions can bring tears you didn’t expect.

And still, somehow, you keep going.

You may smile through the ache.
You may laugh, then cry, then laugh again.
You may feel grateful and broken at the same time.

If you can, pause for a moment.
Be thankful for the Christmases you shared.
For the laughter, the warmth, the love that never really leaves.

Light a candle.
Let the tears come if they need to.
And when you’re ready, begin again, carrying their memory with you.

Some loves never fade.
They simply become part of every Christmas that follows.

Today I will be conducting my last funeral of the year at Yardley Crematorium. It’s going to be a tough one since it is for a dear friend from my bereavement group who died suddenly last month. God bless Anne

Today marks the end of Grief Awareness Week, but that doesn't mean that we should stop talking about grief.

Grief Awareness Week is a brilliant opportunity to encourage people, organisations and leaders to start talking about grief. We need to make sure these conversations continue all year round.

For anyone who has ever wondered what happens at a crematorium and what happens once the curtains have closed and the service is over, this is an excellent sensitive explanation of the full cremation process. Also the crematorium in the video is a crematorium that I have conducted a service at. It’s in Wolverhampton and is a beautiful venue and location.

This groundbreaking episode of Death: A Changing Industry removes the mystery around cremation in the UK, showing every respectful stage of the process, from...
