Hydrotherapy options

At our centre we have both pool and underwater treadmill as options for hydrotherapy.
For some conditions we may opt or pool or treadmill only and for others a combination of both.
Cookie started in the underwater treadmill following TPLO (Cruciate ligament surgery) and now uses a combination of pool and treadmill.

Why we like treadmill:
💦 it’s a more controlled environment
💦 we can determine the water height, speed and duration
💦 good for gait re-education
💦 controlled weight bearing

So great for post surgical rehabilitation, fitness, weight loss, strengthening and muscle building

Why we like pool

💦 non weight bearing
💦 we can work on turns and zig zags movements to build strength when dogs pivot and turn
💦 confidence building
💦 provides more fluid movement for stiff limbs

Great for conservative management of conditions such as dysplasia, patella luxation, ligament weakness.
Along with weight loss, fitness and fun.
Strength building and muscle building.

It’s always good to have options!

A recent pilot study evaluated the effects of a 10-session underwater treadmill programme across 50 dogs of varying ages and musculoskeletal conditions. What stood out immediately was the study’s clinical realism: mixed pathologies, inconsistent baselines, and the kind of patient diversity that complicates research but mirrors our caseloads perfectly.

Over five weeks, each dog completed a structured, controlled underwater treadmill protocol. The researchers reported improvements in joint range of motion across all measured joints, regardless of diagnosis or pathology. While this was a small, exploratory study, the consistency of the findings is compelling - especially given how multifactorial ROM limitations can be in chronic and degenerative disease.

If you’d like a deeper analysis of the methodology, outcomes, and clinical relevance,
