In Iyengar yoga more time is spent working on asana before introducing formal pranayama breathwork. But this doesn’t mean you’re not doing breath work! It takes time to build awareness of how the breath behaves and feels in different poses - It’s very much a somatic practice so it’s important to train the body to feel, to observe subtle actions. Iyengar yoga prepares the body to explore the potential of your breath through creating different ‘landscapes’ within the body through asana and unique use of props.

Even the most enthusiastic of yoga practitioners don’t make linear progress! Life is pretty good at throwing emotional, physical and hormonal curveballs. Iyengar yoga can support you through it all, it’s the friend that tells you to sit down, take a breath and ask what you need today. And by the way we don’t always like what we need so a regular practice isn’t all hunky dory and bliss 24/7! Making changes in times of challenge is difficult and Iyengar yoga gives you options to find a way to practice that is ‘comfortable enough’ for you to stay engaged in your practice instead of abandoning because it feels too much. That’s why I’ve been practicing yoga for over 18 years and its value to me grows year on year.

Yoga is as much a practice of awareness as movement and detailed, timely instructions can help develop better and more subtle awareness in your practice. Awareness helps us determine when an action feels correct and often bring around those little ‘A-ha’ moments! When an action feels correct, it holds you in the moment, allows you to breathe more freely and observe the effect of the asana.

My 2026 yoga classes resume on Friday 9th January and offer classes suitable for complete beginners to intermediate practitioners as well as those who need to work more gently with an injury or health condition.

The Iyengar yoga system of teaching is methodical and progressive, emphasising detailed correctness and absolute safety.

When necessary, it uses supports called ‘props’ that allow students to progress in their practice of postures safely at their own pace, to suit their body. Beginners work in a basic way on simple postures according to their capabilities. As they develop they then move on to more refined ways of working as well as to more complex postures.

Iyengar yoga is suitable for everyone, whatever your ability, age, body shape or level of flexibility
You’ll learn through a carefully graded and systematic programme of Asana (posture), suited to your ability
Teachers gradually introduce Pranayama (breath control) once students have a firm foundation of Asana practice
Practice helps you to relax and energizes the body and mind, bringing vitality, flexibility, strength, concentration, self-confidence and mental calm.

Iyengar yoga can help you overcome and prevent many stresses, strains, aches and pains. It promotes a firm foundation for health and well-being!

December practice …..
Slowing down and supporting myself to feel protected, held and safe in my practice to relax and breathe more consciously. Deeply restorative and calming.
It’s not how I practice all the time, especially as I’m attending in person classes with my senior teachers, online with in Pune and teaching in person classes but in between this is what my body is asking for right now.
Yoga helps you identify and see what you need and offers you the tools and confidence to meet those needs.
