We are Shrewsbury dentists where the highest level of customer care is matched only by our clinical expertise. Esthetique Dental adopts a transparent policy on pricing and estimates will be given before any treatment is carried out. Smoking remains one of the biggest threats to oral health. It’s linked to gum disease, tooth loss, damaged gums, slower healing and, of course, mouth cancer. Patients who smoke also often suffer from staining, bad breath and reduced taste.

Va**ng is often seen as a “safer” alternative, especially for smokers trying to quit. While it may be less harmful than to***co, it is not totally harmless.

Here are a few key things smoking and va**ng can do to your mouth:

- Increase risk of gum disease and recession of the gums, which can lead to tooth instability.

- Impair saliva flow, leading to dry mouth, which raises the chance of cavities and bacterial overgrowth.

- Raise rates of implant failure in people who smoke.

- Raise risk of oral cancers, especially among smokers. Smoking increases risk dramatically; regular screenings and early detection are vital.

✅ What You Can Do to Protect Your Oral Health:

- If you smoke, consider making use of NHS stop-smoking services or other quit-support options.

- Limit or avoid va**ng unless it’s as a temporary measure to quit smoking.

- Maintain excellent hygiene: brush twice daily, clean between teeth and keep regular dental check-ups.

- Stay “mouth aware”; check for any changes in your gums, tongue or inside the mouth; red or white patches, ulcers that don’t heal in about three weeks. If you notice anything unusual, , please get in touch.

🦷 Electric vs Manual Toothbrushes – which is best?

Good technique will always matter most – so, if you’re brushing well with a manual toothbrush and we're happy with your dental health, you may want to stay as you are!

But research shows that most people get better results with an electric toothbrush, particularly one with a round head.

A good electric toothbrush (not all are equal):

✅ Removes more plaque and reduces gum problems over time
✅ Has a built-in timer so you brush for the recommended two minutes
✅ Has pressure sensors to stop you from brushing too hard

While a manual brush used properly can still do the job, an electric brush often gives that extra bit of support that helps protect your teeth and gums day in, day out.
