In 2013, Italian programmer Alberto Brandolini identified a phenomenon regarding the spread of misinformation on the internet. He described the difficulties associated with correcting misinformation in comparison to the ease of creating it in the first instance. Brandolini’s Law.
As a member of the Sports Massage Association and as a CNHC registrant, it is incumbent upon me to ensure that the information that I post on the internet is accurate and that I do not make inaccurate or unverifiable claims about my abilities or skills.
This can often make marketing my business an uphill battle as I have to contend with those who use less than accurate claims to attract new customers. This is not always done in order to purposefully con desperate customers. It is often done because practitioners themselves have been misled into believing that their treatments hold the secret to health, weight loss or some other such spurious claim.
It is my New Year’s resolution to not only continue to uphold the highest standards in all of my promotional materials but to improve the quality of the information that I present. As Brandolini suggests, my undertaking is almost certainly a drop in the ocean in the battle against medical misinformation but at least I will sleep well at night knowing that I have done my best to inform, even at the risk of losing customers to the lure of the unachievable.
