In recent posts I have explained what therapeutic ultrasound (TUS) is and how it works. Today I am going to explore some of the common musculoskeletal conditions that can benefit from TUS.

TUS can be used in both chronic and acute injuries. With standard massage therapy there is not much that can be done in the first few days following injury. With TUS this is not the case. Injuries can be treated very quickly following an injury. This can help reduce pain but also enhance and accelerate the healing process.

For older injuries that may still be causing pain or movement restrictions; TUS can still be very useful as it can reduce discomfort, increase range of motion and create a continued healing process .

TUS can also be useful for longer term inflammatory conditions such as osteoarthritis, bursitis, plantar fasciitis and carpal tunnel syndrome. Additionally, inflammatory tendon conditions such as tennis and golfers elbow can be eased.

The scope of TUS is wide and is a well established treatment offered by sports therapists, sports massage therapists and physiotherapists all over the world.

In my last post I wrote about what Therapeutic Ultrasound (TUS) is. Today I will try to briefly explain how it works.

TUS has two main effects on the body which can be termed Thermal and Non-Thermal.

Thermal Effects; A constant stream of ultrasound creates heat within the tissues. Heat increases blood flow which in turn brings more oxygen. Additionally, heat improves tissue flexibility. Overall, this can improve tissue healing and speed up the recovery process.

Non-Thermal Effects; TUS affects tissue cells through its physical actions. One is called cavitation; the production of microscopic bubbles in tissue fluids which effect tissue cells and give rise to a biochemical reaction which promotes tissue repair and anti-inflammatory responses. The ultrasound waves also create movement within the fluids around the cells, this is called Acoustic Streaming and leads to what is described as micromassage. This is thought to stimulate production of growth factors and increase protein synthesis amongst other things. Again, speeding up the healing process.

TUS can therefore be useful at all stages of injury and recovery. By pulsing the acoustic wave, the thermal effect can be minimised which makes ultrasound suitable in the early stages of injury. Once the inflammatory stage of recovery is complete, the thermal effects can be increased in order to assist with the later phases of healing including chronic issues associated with poor recovery.

In my next post, I will take a look at some examples of the kinds of issues that TUS can be useful for.

I am now using Therapeutic Ultrasound (TUS) as part of my treatment armamentarium. But what is Ultrasound?

Many of us will be familiar with ultrasound as a method used to visualise unborn babies in the womb but it can also be used therapeutically to help tissue healing.

Ultrasound is literally sounds waves that are at an ultra-high frequency.

The average range of audible sound waves (those that we can hear) is 2000-5000Hz. That is 2000 to 5000 waves per second. The overall range can extend from 20Hz to 20,000 Hz but this is dependent upon several factors such as age and previous exposure to loud noises etc.

Dogs have a hearing range of 40,000Hz to 65,000Hz (also written as 40KHz - 65 KHz), so much higher than that of humans.

Medical diagnostic ultrasound uses sound waves between 2million to 15million sound waves per second (2MHz - 15 MHz). In TUS we use either 1MHz or 3MHz sound waves. 1MHz is used on deeper injuries whilst 3MHz can be used for more superficial (nearer the surface) injuries.

In my next post on TUS I will discuss how these sound waves can help with injuries and tissue healing.

In a little over a week on Saturday 6th September, I will be in London joining a group of Restore Scar Therapists providing scar treatments to burns survivors on behalf of Dans Fund.

Dans Fund is a charity which was set up following the Bali bombings in 2002. Polly Brooks lost her husband Dan in the terrorist attack and was the only survivor from a group of 10 friends who went there on holiday. Polly was severely burned in the attack and upon her return she realised there was little support available for adult burns survivors in the UK. She set up Dans Fund to offer emotional and practical support to burns survivors.

At last, here it is. I have now ‘gone electric’.

I have now taken delivery of my Therapeutic Ultrasound (TUS) unit.

Technically, TUS is not a form of Electrotherapy as it doesn’t pass a current into the tissues. It works using sound waves to create warmth within the body. I will write more about how it works at a later date.

I chose to add ultrasound to my treatment mix as it can fill some of the gaps in massage treatment. It can be used on both acute and chronic injuries to improve recovery, increase functionality and reduce pain and inflammation. It can be particularly good for tendonopathies, tears and sprains; things for which massage alone might not be optimal.

In a future post I will explain a little bit more about how it works and what benefits it can have.

I am really excited (and slightly nervous) because I have just spent a considerable amount of money (considerable for a part-time one man outfit such as myself) on a new piece of equipment.

More news next week when it arrives (hopefully 🤞🏻).

Have a great weekend 😀

I waited a long time to attend this course at The Christie Hospital in Manchester and I am really pleased that I eventually managed to attend.

A great course, great tutors and a worthwhile addition to my skill set.
