Thursday 2nd April - Rye to Lydd

Ten miles cracked out, despite having a half day ... and having walked around town lots in the morning. We LOVED Rye and can't wait to go back one day.

Thank you to Pete who spontaneously gave us a room for the night.

Keeping up with tech and online stuff has been difficult with no signal for either of us around Kent. So at last, here's a look back at Thursday April 2nd.

Half a day spent wandering around beautiful, historic Rye before setting off for Lydd.

Our breakfast plans changed in Rye when we swapped an expensive cafΓ© for the much friendlier Rope Walk CafΓ©. Much better food, half the price, and lovely chats with Elaine and Michelle.

We also popped into Simply Rye where Vickie helped me find the perfect thank you card for Pete, our trail angel who scooped us up the night before.

Lovely conversations with Dean and Pam and their dogs, and then with Nicky and Shane on stunning Camber Sands. Nicky's recovering from a fractured pelvis after slipping on ice in January, but was still smiling. They'd love to do this full GB adventure too.

We covered nearly 10 miles of prom and cycle path in sunshine and onwards into the darkness. Hard on our feet but gosh, the sunset was beautiful and we watched as a huge full moon rose. Pretty incredible!

373 miles in the rucksack.

πŸ₯³ Happy Birthday 630 Miles Braver βœ¨οΈπŸ“–

My book is one year old today!

I wanted to post a poignant recap of all the talks I've given, the bookshops who have supported me and the wealth of messages and travels 630MB has been on. But we're on our own travels now, and I don't have the capacity or time to search for all the relevant pics.

Instead, here are a few selected from my favourites. 1. Abbie Barnes of Spend More Time in the Wild. 2. A message from Rhiannon to say her mum has immortalised 630MB into her book granny square blanket. 3. Sami sent me a photo of the book in Hollywood Studios. 4. A shared pic from a reader. 5. The first photo of 630MB.

If you've bought the book, reviewed it, shared it or simply said "congratulations!", thank you, thank you a million times!

A little recap from a stay we had at the end of March ... Katie reached out to me after our first announcement about walking the coast of mainland Great Britain back in April 2025. She said she lives on the coast after Eastbourne and we'd be welcome to come and stay.

Last April, I didn't have a Coast Busters list organised, and I thought I'd remember to add her kind offer later ... but of course, I didn't! We were so grateful that Katie nudged me again with her offer. We spent two nights with her and Neil, her husband, and I can honestly say we were treated like royalty.

Katie and I have so much in common, especially when it comes to a love for walking. Hoping we'll make a trail together one day! Neil and Mike also found lots to talk about, both being carpenters.

Thank you Katie and Neil for your hospitality, for firing up the hot tub (we know how long that took to heat up!) It was Mike's first experience of a hot tub too. Your food, company, kindness and generosity will stay with us always! Oh and, Neil's help getting Mike's boots on ... that cannot be forgotten! 🀣πŸ₯ΎπŸ₯Ύ

We've had so many other wonderful stays with people, in between the camping. We're so grateful to *everyone* who has stepped in to support us at the last minute (a Trail Angel) or who has offered help or accommodation in advance (a Coast Buster). We massively appreciate you all, and I hope I'll be able to give you all a mention to say thanks as we go. πŸ™πŸ’šπŸ’™

*As I write this, we've just tipped past Β£4k in donations to the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. THANK YOU!! If you'd like to chip in too, please click here πŸ‘‡ https://www.dsairambulance.org.uk/one-coast-any-age Xx

It's Field Gate Friday! So here's a higgledy piggledy field gate pic taken on 29 April 2025.

I stood here, just outside Ashburton in Devon, admiring the lack of uniformity. It's located at the early fringes of Dartmoor, and I remember the feeling of knowing I had to find a place to camp up there later. I already held the knowledge that I'd likely have a tough day to come on the moor, once the morning arrived.

The view from this gate gave me hope. Wide, open, and spectacular, oh and with a few bouncy lambs to soothe the soul and bring joy.

Mid-solo Priory Pilgrimage to St Germans Priory, but at five days in, I had (mostly) found my routine. Two evenings later, I arrived at the opening night of the Gigspanner Big Band Saltlines tour where words, music, landscape and footsteps, threaded together beautifully.

A quirky field gate, a moment to reflect on the view, before it drew me on again. I did find a stunning wild camp spot that night, by the way. 360 degrees of view, ponies, big sky and peace.

Despite not being on Dartmoor now, we still occasionally find those spots that bring peace and tranquility.

We're in Ramsgate now taking a breather.

Whoop whoop, thanks FB. πŸŽ‰ I earned the emerging talent badge this week, recognising me for creating engaging content that sparks an interest among our followers! Obviously nothing to do with the fact that we played a naughty prank on everyone! πŸ™ˆπŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜

If you celebrate it, Happy Easter! At last, here are the pics I promised from 1st April, Hastings to Rye.

From a hill east of Hastings, the tent dried quickly in the sunshine and we set off straight into proper leg burners. So many ups and downs and we both agreed it was harder than the Seven Sisters.

Near Covehurst Wood I stopped to take my fleece off just as four jays kicked off in the trees. Loud and chaotic, I watched in awe as I'd never seen four together like that.

Food was a challenge today. Lots of places shut, including at Pett Level, so we ended up at the New Beach Club on nuts and crisps.

Plenty of lovely chats though. Kate and Nora the dog, David with his dog Canela (who later donated online), and generous donations from Carla, Dave, Greg and Keith. Carla even gave us glucose tablets to carry on our way.

At the William the Conqueror pub at Rye Harbour we had a strange 1066 moment. My watch read 17.16 km which worked out as 10.66 miles. Even the WiFi had 1066 in it! Maybe we should have stayed.

We carried on to Rye chasing food and still found none. By the time we reached the Pipemakers Arms, there was no food and a quiz night just starting. Without even knowing our situation, two tables brought us slices of pizza that were provided as part of the quiz tickets.

Mike checked at the bar and there was one pizza left. He donated Β£5 to their charity and John and Mick added donations for DSAA. We were heading off to camp when Pete offered us a place to stay. He gave us key to come and go as we pleased in the morning, after only five minutes of knowing us. We were floored by his trust and ended the day on his roof terrace overlooking Rye. Kindness comes to us in bucketfuls and never ceases to amaze us.

12.7 miles. 363.26 total

Morning everyone, Mike and I have important news. We've had a tough few days in more ways than even I can share or understand. As a result, we spent yesterday evening in a pub here in Hastings pouring out our concerns with one another and going over all the possible options.

After much discussion, we’ve made a big decision about how we want to continue with One Coast Any Age. As weird as it might sound, we’re turning around.

It's not been an easy decision to come to, but it turns out that travelling anticlockwise on foot has been emotionally complicated.

We both agree that clockwise feels more aligned with the tides, the wind, and Mike’s left knee which is struggling with the camber as we walk anticlockwise. It also means I'll be able to charge my Suunto Vertical Solar watch, as it lives on my left wrist. It's currently the wrong side to charge with the sun as we walk eastwards.

So from tomorrow, we begin retracing our steps back to South Haven Point and hope we may bump into a few familiar faces along the way.

We're covering around twelve miles a day now, so we'll keep fingers and toes crossed we'll see you there in a few weeks.

HeadRightOut hugs,
Zoe and Mike πŸ’šπŸ’™ x
