Tongue-tie can affect both breastfed AND bottlefed babies!!!

Here’s a quick rundown of common signs of tongue-tie:

Difficulty latching onto the breast or bottle

Gumming or chewing rather than sucking

Clicking or smacking sounds while feeding

Short feedings or frequent feeds due to inefficiency

Trouble gaining weight or slow weight gain

Tongue appearance: the tongue may look heart-shaped or not able to move freely

Drooling or difficulty swallowing

I’m Laura — a midwife for 13 years — and my journey into tongue-tie support began after my first child was born in 2015.

Despite good positioning and latch, feeding was incredibly painful and I dreaded every feed. An amazing IBCLC at my local breastfeeding drop-in gave me practical support that truly saved my sanity. Feeding improved after 10 days, and my daughter’s tongue-tie was divided at 6 weeks for digestive reasons — a real lesson in perseverance.

In 2017, my second child arrived, and I was sure I knew everything about tongue-tie. I was wrong. I managed three days of breastfeeding before switching to bottles for three weeks while I healed and he waited for his release. I experienced every feeding issue going — infections, abscesses, mastitis, nerve damage, extreme engorgement — the lot!

What kept me going was the feeding support I received. After his release, he went from exclusively bottle-fed expressed breastmilk to exclusively breastfeeding in just three days. It was hard work…

These experiences are why I became a tongue-tie practitioner and IBCLC: to provide the kind of feeding support that so often makes all the difference — because a tongue-tie release is not a magic wand.
