Shoulder pain that won’t go away? It could be your rotator cuff.

Rotator cuff injuries are one of the most common causes of shoulder pain, especially in people who lift, reach, or throw regularly, and they don’t just affect athletes. Poor posture, repetitive movement, and age related changes all play a role.

The good news is that most cases don’t need surgery. With the right combination of physiotherapy, rehab exercises, massage, and some simple changes at home, you can get back to moving freely and without pain.

1️⃣ What is your role at True Physio? I am a newly qualified Physiotherapist at True Physio, having studied for the last 4 years at Keele University for an MSci in Physiotherapy. I also hold a Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage.

2️⃣ What inspired you to pursue a career in Physiotherapy? As an aspiring athlete, I’ve dealt with injuries, but physiotherapists helped me return to the sport I love—tennis. Seeing their impact firsthand, both personally and at Telford Hospital, and driven by my interest in human physiology, I was inspired to become a physiotherapist and help others overcome pain and pursue their goals.

3️⃣ What’s one of your favourite parts about helping clients? Working together as a team, seeing progression and helping towards, and achieving aspirations and goals. Whether that is as simple yet important as being able to mow the lawn pain-free, to athletic adventures and endeavours.

4️⃣ Do you have a fun fact or hidden talent? My down-the-line single-handed backhand? Sometimes it's a Federer-esque masterpiece that makes me question 'Where'd that come from?' Rare and fleeting, but can be glorious.

5️⃣ How do you like to spend your time outside the clinic? My main love is tennis, which I do as much as physically possible, sometimes a little too much, which ends up with me needing my colleagues support in quickening/managing my rehab and pre-hab. In general, I love taking part in any sport, aside from tennis, I also enjoy climbing, going for long walks with my dog, Pilates, and strength/pre-hab sessions. Apart from being active, I also enjoy taking care of my little garden at home, spending time outdoors exploring the National Trust, reading and games.

6️⃣ What’s your go-to way to stay active? Tennis, functional/pre/-rehab home workouts, walking, running, and climbing.

7️⃣ Coffee or tea? Neither, I prefer a hot chocolate.

8️⃣ If you could visit any place in the world, where would you go? Plitvice National Park, Croatia

9️⃣ Cardio or Strength Training? Both, but mainly cardio.

🔟 You couldn’t get through the weekend without? Tennis and walking my dog.

1️⃣1️⃣ What’s the most common issue you see in clinic? Neck and back pain.

1️⃣2️⃣ What do you wish your patients did more of? Listening to their body, trusting the process, and recognising that they are the expert on their own body.

Meet the Team!

At the heart of every one of our clinics are passionate, skilled, and dedicated teams who make everything possible! Over the next few weeks, we’ll be introducing you to the people behind the care: the physios, support staff, and specialists who keep our community moving.

Introducing Jess Hilliard, Sports Rehabilitator and Clinic Manager at Lancaster.

1️⃣ What is your role at True Physio? I’m a Sports Rehabilitator and Clinic Manager.

2️⃣ What inspired you to pursue a career in Sports Rehab? I love helping people. Working with people to alleviate their pain, get them moving better and be able to return to doing all the things they love is so rewarding.

3️⃣ What’s one of your favourite parts about helping clients? The relationship I form with each individual. It is a pleasure to really get to know each patient and find out what the specific goals are and help them work towards this.

4️⃣ Do you have a fun fact or hidden talent? I am currently completing the Wainwrights – 54 down, only 160 to go! (google it)

5️⃣ How do you like to spend your time outside the clinic? I love getting outdoors – walking the dog or hiking in the hills. I also enjoy spending time with family and friends.

6️⃣ What’s your go-to way to stay active? Hiking and doing functional fitness at the gym.

7️⃣ Coffee or tea? Coffee – I couldn’t live without my morning coffee!

8️⃣ If you could visit any place in the world, where would you go? Nashville

9️⃣ Cardio or Strength Training? Strength training – functional rather than heavy weight lifting

🔟 You couldn’t get through the weekend without? A long dog walk with my fiancé – even better with a coffee stop or pub lunch.

1️⃣1️⃣ What’s the most common issue you see in clinic? Back pain

1️⃣2️⃣ What do you wish your patients did more of? Realise that anything is better than nothing. Improving pain or helping the body to recover often doesn’t require big changes, just lots of little steps which help make a big difference.

Why do runners commonly get hip flexor pain? It often stems from overuse, where repetitive movements stretch muscle fibres beyond their limits.

Other culprits include muscle imbalances, poor biomechanics (like excessive pelvic tilt), and insufficient warm-ups. Understanding the cause is key to recovery.
