✨ Frequently asked questions ✨
What is a muscle knot?😳
It feels like a tiny, literal knot under your skin, doesn't it? While it’s a very common experience, "muscle knot" is actually the layman's term for a myofascial trigger point.
What’s happening inside?🤓
A muscle knot is a small, bumped area of muscle that is stuck in a state of constant contraction.
Normally, muscle fibers work like a sliding gate—they contract and relax smoothly. When a knot forms, those fibers get "stuck" together.
This creates a localised patch of high tension that restricts blood flow to the area, leading to a buildup of waste products (like lactic acid) and a lack of fresh oxygen. This is why they hurt when you press on them.
Common symptoms include:
- Localised pain: Sensitive “bead” or “knot” you can feel with your fingers.
- Referred pain: For example, pressing a knot in your shoulder might cause a headache or a shooting pain down your arm.
- Tightness: A noticeable loss of range of motion in the affected limb or joint.
Why do we get them?🧐
Muscles don't usually decide to knot up for no reason. It’s typically a protective response to one of the following:
Repetitive Strain: Doing the same motion over and over (like typing or lifting).
Poor Posture: "Tech neck" or slouching at a desk puts constant, low-level stress on specific muscle groups.
Dehydration and Diet: Muscles need water and electrolytes (like magnesium and potassium) to relax properly.
Stress: Mental stress often manifests as physical tension, particularly in the neck and shoulders.
How do you get rid of them?😏
Self-Myofascial release, heat, hydration and gentle stretching all help to reset the muscle fibers…
