It’s 7am and a couple of degrees above freezing. I’m meeting one of my lovely clients for her Yoga-Fit session – outdoors in the local park!
I have been teaching yoga outdoors for the last six months or so with surprisingly few occasions when it has not been possible due to the weather. So, not to be deterred by the colder weather and as an avid advocate of the benefits of outdoor exercise, I am continuing to offer yoga in the form of Yoga-Fit – suitable for all levels.
With the latest lockdown closing fitness clubs and classes and the weather becoming wintry, the thought of heading out into colder, darker, rainier days for fitness might send us towards hibernation. But by avoiding outdoor exercise during these months, we miss out on a myriad of physical and mental wellbeing benefits.
As an “outdoors” person, I have always instinctively known this to be true. There is wealth of research which bears this out – look it up!
But, back to Yoga. The sessions I have devised and am developing, continue to be true to the strengthening, toning and flexibility benefits of the Hatha Yoga asanas (postures) and mindful breathing practices - with the addition of cardio-specific moves and optional weights - tailored for each client.
Yes, I’ve made adaptions - this is not the yoga I bring to a lovely warm studio or deliver outside on a beautiful July evening. This is Yoga-Fit. Other than weather-appropriate clothing and a mat, all that is needed is an open mind and willing spirit – the body will follow!
