It’s Bank Holiday weekend which can only mean one thing – households across the nation will be firing up their barbecues. Yet with temptation around every corner, it can be difficult not to overindulge. 🌞

Mark Gilbert, nutritionist at The 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan, shares the foods you should be eating to avoid the post-BBQ guilt this Bank Holiday:

Watermelon – Besides being a great low-calorie source of vitamins A and C, watermelon contains lycopene, a natural cartenoid which studies have suggested can lower the risk of heart and vascular disease and some cancers. It is also a concentrated source of citrulline, an amino acid which helps your blood vessels dilate and support good blood pressure. It’s fantastic for a refreshing summer mocktail.

Chickpeas – Chickpeas offer a range of health benefits. As an ingredient, they’re high in folate, other B vitamins, several minerals, protein, fibre and even contain omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids. They have shown to reduce levels of bad cholesterol and make for a great addition to any salad and side dishes.

Have you gained weight over the wintertime or during the COVID-19 lockdowns?

You’re certainly not alone in this. Our changed habits during the lockdown, including decreased movement and increased accessibility to the fridge, means that many of us have gained weight, but another important factor which may have contributed to increased weight gain is stress.

So if your waistline has expanded this year, an important first step to getting back on track is to start by practising a little bit of self-compassion. Many of us engage in self-criticism when we are feeling low or have gained weight, but often when we criticise ourselves, this can be a vicious cycle which leads us to feel worse (and more stressed!) and to then engage in more comfort eating.
Starting with some self-compassion by acknowledging that this has been a challenging year is important, and can allow you to focus on what’s going to be helpful, rather than getting bogged down with negative self-talk.

Here are my top three tips to help you decrease your stress levels and to get back on track towards your goal weight.

1) Focus on stress management. Decreasing our stress levels can help reduce cortisol levels, which can be an important part of weight loss. Two simple strategies to de-stress and decrease your cortisol levels is to make sure that you are getting a good night’s sleep, ideally 7-8 hours, and increase your exercise. So get your walking shoes on and enjoy the sunshine, and make sure you turn off the Netflix and get to bed on time!

2) Consider journaling. Writing your thoughts and feelings down can be a great way to de-stress, to help you express your feelings in an alternative way, rather than engaging in comfort eating to deal with emotions.

3) Enlist support! Sharing our feelings with friends and families is a great way to reduce our stress levels and when we share our goals with others, this also builds accountability. Are you taking time out for yourself?
Are you practising the basics for good health correctly? Getting the foundations right is so important for building upon for success. Sleep, fresh air, day light, exercise, rest, nutritious foods, connecting with friends/family, laughter and minimum of 2.25 litres of water (as the plan advises)..
Remember to look after yourself, as only you can make this happen. Make yourself a priority.

Patience is always needed...it didn’t all go on in a day, it won’t come off in a day.

If you stick to plan, and drink your minimum of 2.25 litres of water, stop letting the odd off plan food creep in, (or an accidental off plan drink 👀) then you will lose fat as fast as it is safely possible on The 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan.

Patience along with consistency are key.

Strive for 100% everyday and you will be rewarded with a healthy weight and/or cm loss each week to help keep you motivated to continue. Don’t get fixated on the number, and never compare. All the time you are trying your very best, that’s the only thing you need to focus on, your effort. You’re never allowed to be disappointed by the number if you have stuck to plan 100% as this is as fast as your body will go. You are only allowed to feel disappointment if you could have tried harder. However, remember a loss is a loss and another step forward in the right direction no matter what the number or speed is.

Keep focusing on the positives.

Please note, it’s best not to weigh yourself everyday, unless you fully understand how weight loss works, and it’s a positive thing for you. My advice is once a week, first thing in the morning on the same day, and the studies show that optimal max number of times is 2-3 times a week. If weighing everyday you have to be prepared to see weight fluctuations up and down, which can be attritubuted to hormones, water retention, periods, constipation and the weather! Also, not drinking your minimum of 2.25 litres a day.

You’re entirely up to you...focus and envisage that goal and don’t stop until you get there... ✨

🥥 Coconut Jelly Sweets 🥥

1.5 teaspoons of Coconut Flavouring
2 heaped teaspoons of mix-a-mousse
150ml boiling water

I always mix the flavouring with the mix-a-mousse first in an empty flavouring pot - I find this helps there be less gelatine “lumps” that can form

Then blitz this with the water preferably in a blender/smoothie maker as this is the quickest and easiest way

Pour into moulds and pop in the fridge for a minimum of an hour (but as long as you can wait!!)

And voila - yummy guilt free summer tasting jellies for all to enjoy 🥥

I am often asked this question by clients, and the answer I give is always...

"The fastest Step is the one you can stick to".

Just because the computer says that you can start on Step 1A or 1B, doesn't necessarily mean that you should.

We are all different. The amount of weight we would like to lose is different, as are our medical backgrounds, personal circumstances and activity levels.

Some people like to be able to take food completely out of the equation, in which case Step 1A or 1B suits them perfectly. Others like to sit down to a "proper" meal with their family, so prefer Step 2 or 3. Some people are gym bunnies so need more calories.
Some people only want to lose a few pounds quickly for a special occasion, others have several stone to lose.

Whatever your circumstances, I have a Step to suit you, and it's one that you will be able to stick to!

☀️How to start your day right☀️

Your morning usually sets you and your mood up for the rest of the day. If like many others you find yourself working from home at the minute, if you’re not waking up and starting the day ready to smash your goals, then you need our awesome little guide!

Let’s get up, get going and get productive!

💤 The number one secret to a happy morning… starts the night before. The biggest secret to waking up easier is getting a good night’s sleep!
To make sure you’re getting your 6-8 hours, try banning phones, TVs, tablets etc in the hour before you intend to go to bed.
They can overstimulate your brain and make it hard to switch off and get a good night’s sleep.
Why not read a book or have a relaxing bath instead?

⏰ Stop hitting snooze… those ‘just 10 more minutes’ moments are actually making it harder for you to wake up.
Instead of giving you those extra minutes that you think would make waking easier, they actually reset your sleep cycle and confuse your body (here’s the science).
To put a stop to your snoozing habits try putting your alarm out of reach so that you have to get yourself out of bed to turn it off, that way you’re less likely to try and sneak in those extra few minutes of shut-eye.
To really get yourself going, why not try out kick-starting your running?

💦 Get hydrated… in our plan we talk about the importance of staying hydrated we explain that having a glass of water first thing is so good for your system.
It’s basically a wake-up call for your insides, getting them ready and working with you in the morning.

🎧 Turn up the tunes… find a playlist that puts you in a great mood, it doesn’t matter what genre – if Death Metal is your thing, turn it up (and send our apologies to your neighbours!)
Not only does this help boost your mood, but it might help you zone out from any distractions that might hinder your productivity.

🍳 Plan a delicious breakfast… nothing gets us out of bed quicker than the thought of cooking up something exciting in the morning. The 1:1 Diet Consultants have some delicious recipes for you to try, like pancakes your way or scrummy eggs and bacon breakfast muffins. If you’re on Plan and are having a tasty product, ask your Consultant for some tips to change it up. Keeping yourself fuller for longer also helps to reduce those annoying little cravings that make you reach for the biscuit tin!

✨Feel grateful… if you start your day feeling down about certain things in your life; whether it’s a stressful time at work, or you just can’t seem to shift that last kilo to hit your weight loss target, practising gratitude can help clear your mind of negative thoughts! When you wake up, try listing three things you’re grateful for?
This could be anything, from a sunny sky to the Consultant who’s getting you through your weight loss journey.

✨Life is never perfect, nor is weight loss and maintenance

✨Keep working on getting your thought process away from I’ve been ‘good’ or ‘bad’, so you’re neither ‘in’ or ‘out’, just keep trying to do your very best.

✨If you have fallen down, brush yourself off, take a deep breath, and then try to get straight back up. Keep making sure that you get out of your own way. You are your biggest hurdle. Not other people. You.

✨If you have one flat tire, do you slash the other three?

✨Failing is part of the progress and there is only one way to improve, and thats trying again.

✨Just keep moving forward one day at a day, one meal at a time. One foot in front of the other.

✨Overall be kind to yourself, and never ever give up, or lose sight of your goal or what it represents, Improved health. Mentally amd physically. Now that’s worth fighting for.

✨Nobody is perfect nor is this journey. It wasn’t supposed to be, or has to be to be successful

Remember these:
✨You are entirely up to you
✨The best project you will ever work on is you
✨Wake up with determination, go to bed with satisfaction
✨Prioritise you and your goals, you’re worth the effort
✨Choose your hard. Weight loss is hard. Weight maintenance is hard. However, being overweight, unhealthy and unhappy with yourself can be even harder

✨ 10 THINGS TO DO EVERY MONTH TO BE SUPER ORGANISED ✨

The beginning of the month is the perfect time to reset, refresh and stay organised. There are so many simple yet powerful things you can do for yourself to prevent unnecessary stress. Even if you think you’re a disorganised person, you can learn new habits which will help you stay super organised!
In this post I’m sharing 10 things at the beginning of every month to ditch the unnecessary stress and organise the things that matter most to you.

1. SET YOURSELF GOALS
At the start of the month I will open up my Planner and write down my goals, habits and bucket list for the month ahead. Then at the end of each month, I’ll go back to my planner and reflect on what went well and what I want to change. I’ve found that by having monthly goals I’m more likely to achieve everything on my list. In the past when I’ve set myself a New Year Resolution, my motivation tends to wear thin and I usefully forget about my goal by the end of the year. Another reason why I prefer monthly goals is because it allows smaller goals to be added to your list.

2. ORGANISE YOUR PHONE PHOTOS
Firstly I’ll admit that I have over 1000 photos on my phone! So as I write this I’m also reminding myself to go through all of my photos, delete the ones which I don’t want and upload the others to my Google Drive. You can also upload to them places such as iCloud, Amazon Cloud and Drop Box. You can then delete those photos from your phone to save space and have peace of mind knowing that your memories are in a safe place. Doing this will help you stay super organised every month!

3. CLEAR OUT YOUR PURSE
I’m not sure about you, but my purse seems to become full very quickly! By the end of the month it’s loaded with loose change and old receipts which I’ve kept just in case. Clearing out your purse at the beginning of the month is a great habit to start doing to get rid of the clutter which you no longer need. Not only will your purse feel lighter but your life will feel just that little bit lighter too.

4. MAKE PLANS WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY
Most of us are usually very busy therefore finding the time to see friends and family, needs to be planned in advance. Use the beginning of the month to reach out to your loved ones and schedule in dates, nights out and days out when lockdown ends... Also, don’t forget about the family you live with. Even though you see them every day, plan activities and fun things to do together.

5. SCHEDULE APPOINTMENTS
Review your calendar at the beginning of the month and schedule appointments to make sure you get the time and date which works best for you. Do you want to get your hair done ready for a date or night out? Are you due a check up at the dentist? Have you been meaning to treat yourself to a massage? Get your appointments booked in and you will feel super organised and productive!

6. BUY BIRTHDAY CARDS
At the beginning of the month make a list of all the birthday cards you need to buy for the month ahead. It’s best to include the first week of the following month too, just in case someone’s birthday is on the first! You can also do this if you plan on buying birthday gifts too. Next time you’re out shopping you can pick up everything you need and avoid those embarrassing belated birthday wishes.

7. DEEP CLEAN YOUR HOME
Stay super organised by giving your home the deep clean at the start of every month!

8. BUDGET FOR THE MONTH
The start of the month is a great time to budget for the month ahead. You can figure out how much you need to spend on bills and grocery’s etc. With your remaining money you can work out how much you want to save and how much you want to spend.

9. CHOOSE A BOOK TO READ
I love a good book and I always give myself one or two books to read every month. I like to mix it up with a self-development book and a fiction book. Try to pick out at least one book at the beginning of the month.

10. CLEAN OUT YOUR REFRIGERATOR
Stay super organised at the beginning of each month by cleaning out your refrigerator. Spend just 15 minutes clearing out those items that are expired. From this exercise you will get a good idea of what items you need and you will be able to plan your step 2 and 3 meals more effectively using what you already have.

And finally, a New Month is the perfect time to start the New You. Want to lose a few lbs for Easter, or a couple of stone for your Summer Holiday... now is the time to start.
