A true story which happened in 2017 around the Cook Islands. 🌊 This wasn’t just instinct. It was something deeper. 🐋

Marine biologist Nan Hauser was diving in the South Pacific when a massive humpback whale suddenly swam straight toward her.
At first, she thought it was an attack.
But then… the whale did something unbelievable.

It nudged her gently, tucked her beneath its fin, and kept her hidden — wrapping her in what felt like a protective embrace.

For nearly 10 minutes, the whale swam in tight circles, never letting her drift too far. Nan didn’t know it then, but a tiger shark was lurking nearby — a deadly predator known for sudden ambushes.

The whale had seen it.
And it made a choice.

It didn’t just warn her.
It shielded her.

When the danger finally passed, the whale released her… and swam away.

Nan still believes it was no accident — and scientists now agree that humpback whales may show altruism, protecting not only their young but also other animals — even humans — from predators.

A moment that reminds us: sometimes, compassion crosses species. 💙

Not just a hug.
A rescue.

“But it made you strong!”

How often we are tempted to say this to someone when they’ve been through a difficult time.

And it may well be the case.
But chances are that they are feeling anything but strong. They are likely feeling
exhausted
shattered
weak.

And they need someone who recognises that. Someone who - for just a while - can be the strong one for them. Can offer them a shoulder to cry on and an arm to support them.

Yes, when they feel like that, they need to rest.
They need to recharge, recoup and regain the strength they’re being told they have inside of them.

Because what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.
But it sometimes very nearly kills us -
exhausts us
shatters us
weakens us.

They didn’t want to have to be strong.
They wanted life to be kinder.

And as it wasn’t, it might help them more than we realise

If we bring the kindness instead.
