One step at a time.

Whether that’s moving through the phases of pregnancy

Breathing through your stages of labour

Or taking on the postpartum period.

Don’t overwhelm yourself.
It can often feel far more manageable if you take it step by step, breath by breath, bit by bit.

I am currently in the process of breaking down the definition of Physiological Birth for a post.

This made me think about how there is this huge push currently to address issues within the maternity system, scrutinise coercion in birth, challenge harmful use of unnecessary intervention and to reclaim our power and rights as birthing people and individuals.

This is all great and I’m behind it 100%.

BUT

It has made me reflect on the fact that this might mean that people who did not, cannot or choose not, to have a physiological ‘natural’ birth are left feeling like they have in some way failed.
If you have previously had a traumatic birthing experience, did not get the birth you ‘planned for’, or maybe you opted for or had to have medical intervention, know that your birth was NOT unsuccessful.

This is also goes for those of you who do not identify within the pigeonhole of standardised, heteronormative, female birthers.
Q***r birth is currently underrepresented, undersupported and underappreciated.

EVERY BIRTH IS VALID.

Still unsure about whether getting a doula is right for you?

Whether you are planning this journey solo or if you have a birth partner, supportive friend or family member by your side, if you can, it can be incredibly beneficial to also have a Doula join your birthing squad.

We are birth obsessed, unflappable, compassionate and informed birthing partners.

Popularity and awareness of Doulas is also on the up-and-up. This means that hopefully in your area you now have more choice than ever in picking the right Doula for you! So spend the time hunting for that person that suits you and feels tailored to your needs & interests.

There are a number of personal reasons why an individual may opt for a doula but did you know that continuity of support from a birthing partner has a tonne of evidence based benefits.

Having a doula can mean you are…

MORE LIKELY TO HAVE A SHORTER LABOUR.

MORE LIKELY TO HAVE A SPONTANEOUS VAGINAL BIRTH & LESS LIKELY TO HAVE A C-SECTION.

LESS LIKELY TO ASK FOR PAIN MEDICATION. Including an epidural, which can prevent further medical intervention that often follows.

LESS LIKELY TO EXPERIENCE POSTNATAL DEPRESSION.

Increase your birth satisfaction and make you LESS LIKELY TO REPORT NEGATIVE RATINGS OR FEELINGS ABOUT YOUR CHILDBIRTH EXPERIENCE.

The continuous and compassionate support of a doula can help you deal with the often “harsh environment” that the modern-day hospitalisation of birth can create.
Doula’s can help reduce the pain of childbirth, physically & emotionally creating a more optimum birthing environment & experience, boosting oxytocin – decreasing anxiety/stress/fear and improving the confidence of birthing people!

As long as having a Doula is accessible to you WHAT’S NOT TO LOVE?!
(And if it doesn’t feel accessible to you reach out to Doulas in your local area and see what your options are)

If you have any further questions, if you’re interested in the sources of this info or are considering a Doula for your birthing journey give me a message!

When we talk about a Doula or birth partner advocating for a birthing person it isn't about speaking FOR you or INSTEAD of you.

It's about getting to know you, your choices, your boundaries, your wants, your non-negotiables and knowing your Birth Plan inside out.

Advocacy is about creating the space for you to make your own decisions. Allowing you the time to make your decision. As well as supporting your decisions for you and your baby.

Evidence Based Birth also suggests advocacy might look like:

- Encouraging you & your partner to ask questions
- Amplifying your voice if it’s being dismissed or ignored
- Facilitating communication between care provider & parent(s)
- Teaching & practicing positive communication skills with you
- Initiating information being given and consent being asked for by care provider

As a birth partner this is a glorious gift you can offer the birthing person.
It comes down to communication in the lead up to birth. So get talking, run through ALL the possible scenarios and prepare yourself for every outcome and how you want to respond to them.

That way your birth is always powered by your choice.

- They can only say no to your decision if they have good reason
- If maternity services say no, their reason much be explained, saying “it’s our policy/rules” is not a valid explanation
- You always have the right to choose a homebirth or birth without assistance

IF YOUR RIGHTS ARE BEING IGNORED OR NOT LISTENED TO.
- You can ask to speak to the Head of Midwifery (senior midwife) in your area
