In a diet-obsessed world, it can be exhausting trying to explain why diets don't work.

Unfortunately, the diet industry continues to grow at an alarming rate and it's not slowing down anytime soon (globally it's worth billions and billions of dollars).

The marketing strategies are getting smarter and influencers continue to promote quick-fix products to the masses.

And every time I see a new product or fad going viral, I'm reminded that these unsustainable (and sometimes dangerous) diets aren't disappearing anytime soon.

However, I became a nutritionist because I'm passionate about helping people improve their health and wellbeing with the right information.

So even with a multi-billion dollar industry against me, I will happily fight this uphill battle ๐Ÿ‘Š

Even if I think I sound like a broken record most of the time ๐Ÿ˜…

Last year I cancelled my gym membership.

Why?

Because I started dreading going to the gym to exercise.

There was once a time I really enjoyed it - but more recently I started trying other ways of exercising and the gym took a back seat.

Does this mean I'll never step foot in a gym again? Absolutely not - I will join up again if/when I feel inspired to go. But for now, I'm being drawn to other forms of exercise such as hiking, walking, climbing and running.

Similar to nutrition, I think we tend to over-complicate exercise. Unless you have specific goals, just aim to show up and stay consistent.

Regardless of the exercise you do, you'll still feel better for moving your body more. Whether that be going for a 30 minute walk everyday or getting a few friends together on the weekend to try a new activity - find what you enjoy and do THAT ๐Ÿ˜Š

Nutrition myths seem to get crazier every year and 2021 was no exception ๐Ÿคฏ

TikTok, in particular, had a big part to play in this, with the likes of chia seed water and chlorophyll drops being promoted as health saviours.

I recently collaborated with The Nutrition Consultant on a blog post about the top nutrition myths of 2021.

Happy New Year! ๐Ÿฅณ

January is here, so you know what that means... it's "new year, new me" season. Fantastic ๐Ÿ™„

This is a quick reminder that just because it's a new year, doesn't mean you need to change who you are!

You can make new goals for the year ahead without the pressure to completely re-invent yourself.

Instead, try re-framing the whole "new year, new me" thing into "new year, new goals".

I know I'll be setting some goals for 2022 - personal and career ones. But if that's not your thing, that's completely OK too. You do you.

Anyway, I hope everyone has a wonderful 2022 ๐Ÿ’• Fingers crossed it's better than the last couple of years! ๐Ÿคž

Just because your Aunt is opting for salad over roast potatoes this Christmas, doesn't mean you should.

Every year I see people feeling guilty about eating food they enjoy over Christmas ๐Ÿซ

But what if I told you that the restriction, the food guilt and the obsession with "burning off" calories is doing more harm than good? In fact, the more you restrict certain foods and try to control your diet, the more likely you'll think about these foods and crave them!

This doesn't mean that you should go and eat 3 boxes of Quality Street because "you can" - you'll probably feel quite sick if you did that anyway. Instead, try to find a middle ground that works for you (this can take time, so don't beat yourself up if you can't find a balance straight away).

โญ๏ธ Alongside eating foods you enjoy, you can also focus on small food goals (which involve ADDING foods into your diet). For example, aiming to get your 5-a-day or to have sufficient protein with every meal.

โญ๏ธ It might also be helpful to set goals that aren't food oriented, such as going for a walk every day or setting aside 5 minutes to do some mindfulness practice.

You aren't a bad person for enjoying foods like cake.

And you aren't a good person because you only eat salad at a birthday party.

Labelling foods "good" and "bad" has become the norm, but this can harm our relationship with food.

We say things like:
๐Ÿ’ฌ"I have been bad today, I had cake and a burger! I will be good tomorrow"
๐Ÿ’ฌ"I'm trying not to eat chocolate because sugar is bad for you"
๐Ÿ’ฌ"I'll order the salad because I am being good"

The language we use around food can have a big impact on how we feel about food and ourselves.

Labelling foods "bad" can make us:
๐Ÿ˜ฐ Fear these foods
๐Ÿ˜” Feel down when we have eaten these foods
๐Ÿ˜ฉ Believe we are out of control for eating these foods

Yes, there are more nutritious and less nutritious foods - and ideally we should consume more of the nutrient-dense foods for our health. But there is a balance.

Choosing more a neutral language to describe food can improve our relationship with food - which can ultimately make you feel less stressed and out of control around food ๐Ÿ™Œ

NEW WEBSITE NOW LIVE!

I finally have a blog ๐Ÿ™Œ

It has taken a lot of time and patience - creating a website from scratch by myself was... pretty challenging ๐Ÿ˜…

I have had the domain name for over a year now, but with the past year being so up and down, I never felt ready to get stuck into creating it.

The website will develop over time, but for now it will be a place I can write about nutrition and wellbeing where I am not limited by caption length ๐Ÿฅณ

I have 3 blog posts on my blog already:
๐Ÿฅฆ 5 Ways To Fall In Love With Veg
๐Ÿงโ€โ™€๏ธ What Is Body Image and How Can I Improve It?
โฐ Time-Saving Tips For Healthy Cooking

You can also find:
