Coastal school offers an outdoor experience which stimulates and frees the mind, allowing our children to step out of their comfort zone, build upon self-esteem, problem solve, develop new skills and reflect on their achievements.

🦭 The Big and Beautiful 🦭

It’s not unusual to see adult seals hauled out on our coastlines – they come ashore to rest, sleep and digest their food. Especially after the pupping season or during/after their moult, they can look underweight and tired. It's important we know how to respect them best!

🔹 Seals need rest – approaching can disturb them, wasting vital energy.
🔹 Seals are powerful wild animals with strong jaws for a painful bite.
🔹 Zoom in from a distance - Seals don't appreciate selfies.
🔹 A healthy seal on land is normal – they don't need to be wet or in water.

👉 The best way you can help them is pretty easy! Stay downwind and at a distance of 100m. Dogs should remain on a lead and keep your children close by.

Our trained Marine Mammal Medics may attend to carry out a visual assessment from a safe distance, and will often monitor the seal to make sure it’s getting the rest it needs. Adult seals have been spotted on beaches all around the UK in recent weeks. If you come across one and are concerned, please get in touch with us – we’re here to help. 🦭💙

If you are heading to Seaton Carew for a paddle, please make sure you wear some protective footwear.

In common with other areas along the coastline, there is an increase in the number of weever fish due to the recent warm weather.

The fish lie under the sand on the shoreline and have venomous spines on their dorsal fins which when stood on puncture the skin on the foot – sometimes leaving the spine in the wound - causing a very painful sting.

• Please wear protective footwear such as beach shoes or sandals if you are paddling.

• Shuffle your feet in the sand when entering the water.

• Be extra cautious in shallow, sandy areas.

If you are stung by a weever fish, seek advice from one of the lifeguards and ensure that you place your foot in hot (not scalding) water to relieve the pain.

Our final session of the summer was a very slow pace ....think the heat and it being late afternoon had a lot to do with it 😴
We still found a few creatures in the rock pools....lots of sea sticklebacks, a velvet swimming crab, a shore crab 🦀 and (we think) a sea gooseberry 🤔

Our tarp has seen its last today, after a member of the public walked into one of our ropes 🤷‍♀️🙈😲 ....in the bin it goes 🤨

We had some fab construction going on with castles and moats - some great team work 👍 We finished off with toasted marshmallows 😋 👌 😍 always a crowd pleaser!

Big thanks to Jackie Ullah for all her help today and past session 🙏 you deserved that smore today 😉

BDMLR North East England thank you so much for coming down to Whitburn Bents beach this afternoon to take a look at this little one 🦭 we stumbled across today whilst out rock pooling with The Kayaks Community families.
Thanks to Kerrie 🙏she took over the watch ....hope the little one got back into the sea 🌊 🤞
