We made a post last year about care of your newborn as the weather gets hotter!

Here is some information from different Internet sources (linked below) :

Try to keep the room as cool as possible.

👶🏼 Ideally the room where your baby sleeps should be kept at about 16-20 degrees but in the hot weather this can be really difficult.

🌬️ Create a flow of air by having as many windows open as possible and have the curtains or blinds partly closed during the day to protect from direct sunlight.

🍶 If you have a fan, pop a bottle of frozen water or bowl of ice in front of it so it cools the air as it moves.

🌡️If you are worried about the room temperature then it may be worth having a room thermometer to keep an eye out.

Think about bedding

🛏️ Use cotton sheets and blankets.

💦 Avoid using waterproof sheets, as these can be sweaty for the baby and make them overheat.

🌡️Avoid swaddling your baby so they can kick off the blanket more easily if they get hot.

Dressing your baby

🚼 Do not be afraid to leave your baby to sleep in only a nappy if it is hot in the room, especially above 24 degrees.

👣 If your baby doesn't like this, then just pop a thin cotton blanket or muslin as a single layer over them.

👶🏽 When checking your baby’s temperature, feel their chest or the back of their neck as their hands and feet will be cooler than the rest of their body.

Feeding your baby

🤱🏿 If you breastfeed your baby you may find they want to feed a little more often. They shouldn’t need any water if they're under 6 months old as breast milk is as hydrating as water.

🍼 If your baby is having formula then continue to make the milk as per the manufacturer's instructions

Being out and about during the day

👶🏿 It’s really important to avoid placing a blanket or cover over the buggy or pram as this stops air circulating and can make it even hotter for the baby.

🧴 Use factor 50 or higher sun cream on babies over the age of 6 months. Babies under 6 months should be kept in the shade, or should wear a hat to shade them if you are walking about.

🌡️ Regularly check your baby’s temperature and be prepared that they may need feeding a little more often.

Keep them out of the sun

🌞 Under six months, babies’ skin contains too little melanin to give any protection from the sun so they shouldn’t be exposed at all.

We are seeing cases of COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses rising in our hospitals. There are things you can do to help protect our patients and staff that will help us to continuing delivering care to those who need us:

🦠 Do not visit our hospitals if you have any symptoms of respiratory, viral infection, diarrhoea or sickness.
😷 Wear a face mask in clinical areas within our hospitals where patients are being seen or treated.

New figures reveal that while the highest number of women were screened last year for breast cancer, nearly 4 in 10 declined their invite.

Regular breast screening can find breast cancer before you notice any signs or symptoms.

There was a surprise Royal visit for newborns this morning as HRH The Princess Royal marked 42 years since opening Princess Anne Hospital.

The Princess Royal, who is Patron of the Royal College of Midwives (RCM), was greeted on arrival by a number of senior leaders from University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, before touring the maternity unit and meeting midwives, healthcare support workers, hospital staff and families.

Emma Northover, Director of Midwifery at Princess Anne Hospital, said:

"We were delighted to welcome HRH The Princess Royal to our hospital and show her just how far we have progressed since she last visited us to officially open Princess Anne Hospital."

“I know our midwives and hospital staff very much enjoyed having the opportunity to speak to her and highlight the great work happening across our midwifery teams.”

At the end of the tour, The Princess Royal planted a tree outside the hospital on Coxford Road to commemorate her visit.

Clinicians from University Hospital Southampton have helped to design England’s first helicopter incubator which will help to transport critically ill babies in need of specialist care.

The clinicians, who are part of the Southampton Oxford Neonatal Transport service (SONeT), were the first team to use the new incubators for two vital transfers in the South.

Speaking on behalf of SONeT, Dr Sarah Davidson, neonatal consultant at University Hospital Southampton and SONeT Wessex lead said:

“A lot of time has gone into making this a safe way to transport even our sickest patients, ensuring they have access to intensive care equipment and therapies whilst they are travelling to the specialist centre."

“The incubator system will allow SONeT to move patients who were previously too small or needed additional support and we are very pleased to say we have already been able to fly using the new incubator and this was a patient who previously would not have been able to be flown to us for specialist care."
