Deadlift masterclass 💪🏻
1. BREATHE & BRACE
--
Place hand on bar, hips high, fill your stomach with air, breathe deep into your belly & then engage your core.
2. HIPS DOWN
--
Create tension in the lower body before you start. Bring hips to start position, engage your glutes & hamstrings.
3. SLACK OUT OF THE BAR
--
Slack is the space between the barbell and where the plates sit on the bar. To 'pull the slack' pull your upper body 'up' on the bar by enaging your lats, creating tension & flattening the back.
4. ARMPITS INTO YOUR POCKETS
--
The goal is to engage your lats. Think about flexing your armpits or tucking your shoulders down into your pockets. Tight lats keep the barbell close to your body throughout & stops the bar drifitng away from you.
5. HANDS AS HOOKS - ARMS AS CHAINS
--
Keep arms straight throughout. Bending your arms increases the range of motion & reduces power. Hands should be clamping down as strong as possible on the bar, take the slack out of the bar, lengthen your arms & pull your upper body up.
6. SHINS TO BAR
--
The greater the distance between your hips & the load, the harder your glutes & lower back work. Shins touch the bar.
7. PUSH THE FLOOR AWAY
--
Think about pushing your feet into the floor like a leg press.
8. HIPS THROUGH
--
Bring your hips to the barbell as soon as the barbell travels above the knee.
You want to close the distance between the hips & the bar as soon as possible for a more efficient movement.
It is at this point you switch from the initial 'push off the floor' to 'pull' to engage your glutes and extensors.
HOWEVER, one common mistake is to start leaning back. Don’t don't hyperextend, you risk hitching the bar on your thighs or hurting your back
9. LOCK THE HIPS & KNEES TOGETHER
--
Simialr to not hyperextending at the top of the movement, thinking of locking the hips & knees together is a good way to ensure there is more balance at the top & you are in the correct position.
Lock your knees too early… you can fall forward, lock your knees to late… you can lean back too far.
