🕊️ A Personal Message from Our Founder, Simon Waters 🕊️

I founded Waters & Sons - Merryoak in 2009 after having worked in the industry following my previous career as an auxiliary nurse, to be a family owned and run funeral directors as I could see that there was a lack of local family funeral directors in the area. Over this time I have managed to build a great rapport with the local community, serving many local families and fulfilling their wishes.

Over the years my son, David, has grown into the industry and have fully joined the family business of which I am still very much involved day to day.

Years on, to now we now have fully licensed and industry trained Staff who, individually, take it upon themselves to maintain their own professional development and continued training throughout their careers.

We are 100% Independent and although our main funeral home and care centre is in Merryoak, we have funeral homes in Aldermoor and Portchester too, all with their own comfortable and inviting private arranging rooms and beautifully presented chapels of rest.

Being Independent means absolute continuity for you as a family.

Writing a eulogy can be a deeply personal and emotional task. Here’s a five-step guide to help you create a meaningful tribute:

1. Gather Information and Reflect

🤍 Collect Stories and Memories: Talk to family and friends to gather stories, memories, and insights about the person’s life. Think about their personality, passions, achievements, and how they impacted others.
🤍 Reflect on Your Relationship: Consider your own relationship with the person. What special moments did you share? How did they influence your life?

2. Create an Outline

🤍Introduction: Start by introducing yourself and your relationship to the deceased. Acknowledge the occasion and the purpose of the eulogy.
🤍Life Story: Provide a brief overview of the person’s life, touching on key milestones.
🤍Personal Anecdotes: Include personal stories and anecdotes that capture the essence of the person. These should illustrate their character, values, and how they lived their life.
🤍 Legacy: Reflect on what the person meant to those around them, the values they embodied, and how they’ll be remembered.
🤍 Conclusion: End with a final thought, quote, or message. This could be a note of gratitude, a wish for peace, or a final goodbye.

3. Write the Eulogy

🤍Keep It Concise: Aim for a length of about 5-10 minutes when spoken aloud. This typically translates to 500-1,000 words.
🤍 Be Authentic: Write in your own voice, using a tone that feels natural to you. Whether it’s formal, casual, or somewhere in between, the sincerity of your words will resonate most.
🤍 Balance Emotions: It’s okay to express grief, but also celebrate the person’s life. Try to strike a balance between acknowledging the loss and honoring their memory.

4. Revise and Practice

🤍 Edit for Clarity: Review your eulogy to ensure it flows well and clearly conveys your message. Check for any grammar or spelling errors.
🤍 Practice Reading Aloud: Practice delivering the eulogy aloud, either to yourself or in front of someone else. This helps you become more comfortable with the material and allows you to adjust the pacing.

5. Deliver with Poise

🤍 Stay Calm and Composed: On the day, take deep breaths and remember it’s okay to pause if you become emotional. Have a glass of water nearby and tissues if needed.
🤍 Speak from the Heart: Focus on delivering your words with sincerity. Even if you become emotional, the heartfelt nature of your eulogy will resonate with those in attendance.

By following these steps, you can create a heartfelt and memorable eulogy that honors the life and legacy of your loved one.
