Did you know most cosmetic acrylate copolymers are not common skin allergens? Our audit published in the Contact Dermatitis journal analysed over 1,300 patch test patients and found true allergy to glyceryl acrylate acrylic acid copolymer, sodium polyacrylate and Carbopol was extremely rare, with most reactions being irritant, even with acrylate allergy. Access the journal for the full paper.

🦷 New publication alert. My paper is out in Clinical and Experimental Dermatology . We looked at 291 UK toothpastes and found most had fragrance, limonene, menthol and some had stannous fluoride, which can cause lip and mouth allergies. Comment NICKEL FREE for my alternatives list, and ask your questions below. Shaving rashes are often blamed on “sensitive skin”, but metal allergy is a frequent cause I see in clinic. Many razor blades contain nickel, including stainless steel. For people with nickel allergy, repeated contact can trigger itching, redness and eczema exactly where shaving happens. Switching blades or hair-removal methods can make a real difference.

Think a product is safe because it’s “natural”?

Linalool is common cause of airborne allergy.

Linalool is found in most scented skincare, shampoos, perfumes and essential oils like lavender and citrus.

When it oxidises, it becomes more allergenic, often causing eyelid eczema, neck rashes and hand dermatitis.

If switching products hasn’t helped, patch testing is the only way to identify your eczema trigger.
