Knee pain is experienced by many people whether they exercise or not and when this pain hits it is often assumed that the knee joint itself is the problem. However, it is often the result of an imbalance in all the muscles that attach above and below the joint. Shiatsu is an excellent therapy to diagnose and help correct these imbalances allowing the client to return activity. We know exercise is good for us but are you one of those people that in order to get in the mood you need a dopamine hit like music or caffeine or both? Over time these will be less effective and are often layered with even more extrinsic dopamine hits. To overcome this try flipping a coin as to whether you use these or not. This will not only keep the dopamine hits fresh but you will also start to develop an intrinsic dopamine hit for the exercise itself.

It’s hard to switch off sometimes which in time can lead to overthinking and worry. This then becomes a pattern which in Chinese Medicine results from a Spleen imbalance and is associated with the Earth Element. Further knock on effects can be digestive issues, fatigue and procrastination. Shiatsu is a great way to help rebalance these energetic imbalances and address the root causes. Many of us know that serotonin is involved in creating feelings of well-being but most of our serotonin is created in, and stays in, our gut. However, when this is produced our vagus nerve conveys this info from our gut to our brain which in turn leads to serotonin being released there. One of the best ways to help our gut produce serotonin is to consume fermented foods such as kefir, kimchi and kombucha, the 3 K’s. Food is medicine

Did you know that deliberate heat exposure such as sitting in a sauna can mimic the benefits of moderate intensity aerobic exercise? One study showed similar beneficial effects of sitting in a sauna for 20 minutes to that of riding a stationary bike, at a reasonable pace, for 20 mins. A great way to help maintain a certain level of fitness when injured or to gain some of the benefits of cardiovascular training if you are unable to exercise.

We all face changes in life with some forced upon us and some of our own choice. However, even those changes we choose often make us feel unsettled and wondering if we have made the right decision despite all our justifiable reasons for that choice. This period of transition before we adapt to our new circumstances is called “liminality” and can generally feel uncomfortable but which is entirely natural. We have left something familiar, like an old job, and have yet to adjust to the new environment. Don’t second guess yourself, especially at the beginning, it’s just the process we HAVE to go through to improve and move forward.

After experiencing various respiratory illnesses many people still find they have restricted breathing once they have recovered. Although complications from the original illness may remain an overlooked reason can be the lack of movement in the scapula and rib cage. A stuck scapula relates to a reduction of lung chi and physically restricts the rib cage. Also, the shallow breathing experienced with an illness means the rib cage and associated muscles may loose their ability to move appropriately restricting the diaphragm. Shiatsu is a great way to reintroduce the freedom of movement back into these structures as well as working with the lack of or blocked chi that can occur after a respiratory illness. As we enter the year of the Chinese Yin Wood Snake we can be reminded of many things that we want to do but have put off for many reasons. The Snake’s ability to shed its skin has long been a symbol of transformation and renewal so let’s use this energy and make this year the one where we make the changes we really want.

When we eat something that tastes sweet very often we want another portion. This is because sugar in the gut signals to the brain via our vagus nerve ,which releases dopamine, thereby making us want more. However, have you had the same desire when eating savoury tasting food? If sugar has been sneaked into a processed food you may well have. We have neurones that detect sugar whether we taste it or not and the same cycle of wanting more occurs. So if you want to help yourself control these cravings eat as much home cooked food as possible or at least check foods that previously you would not have thought contained sugar as they do not taste sweet.

When we are learning new physical skills such as punching effectively, swinging a golf club or serving in tennis we need many, many repetitions to become proficient. This obviously takes time and dedication but research has shown one practice that can help accelerate our learning. Immediately after completing a session it is recommended that we sit quietly for 1-10 minutes which allows the brain to replay the sequence which is important for skill consolidation.
