When we feel stressed and overwhelmed our brains want to focus on the negative things in life, it thinks that by doing so it’s keeping us safe. However, changing our focus and noticing the positive things can, over time, help us to feel calmer and happier. A simple way to do this is to write down a few things each night that have made you happy during the day and they don’t have to be big things. Some things I’ve written down this week include:
- Folding a pile of washing that’s been sitting around for way too long
- Coffee & chat with a good friend
- The sun! Oh, the sun ☀️
- Receiving a great update from a client
Even on the worst day, there will be something that’s been good. It may just take you longer to recognise it!
Practice makes perfect. The more we do this, the more we’re training our brain to look for the positives and the easier it will be to notice them.
And it you’re a stationery addict like me then it’s also a great excuse for buying a new notebook!
Give it a try or save this tip as a reminder to look for the positives when life feels overwhelming.
