So here it is, a supposedly '100% biodegradable' latex balloon 3 years to the day since it was put in this jar of seawater with air holes in the lid. The jar itself is a bit worse for wear - the lid is totally seized up and there's some gloop in the water but the Triceratops balloon has not changed a bit since June 2015. For anyone using water balloons or participating in balloon releases, please consider that the 'biodegradable ' claim means only that it will break down in the heat of an industrial composter - nothing like the conditions of the real environment or especially the cold, oxygen-poor sea, where balloons unnecessarily kill many turtles, seabirds and other creatures ☹ In reply to some of the comments below, this does not claim to be a scientific experiment, it merely aims to show that a product's claim of being biodegradable is probably very different from what most customers would assume. Plymouth university are shortly starting a study to determine true biodegradability of balloons in the marine environment.
