There are lots of races coming up over the summer and with RTR and the Mac100 this weekend be sure to take a read…. of the simple stuff! 💦💧
Part 1 – Hydration & Electrolytes
Did you know you can drink water and still be dehydrated?
Most of us think that that to be hydrated is to just drink water, but in fact we must take on water nutrients known as electrolytes to feel fully hydrated. Many may know of these already in the health & fitness world. And I would say at a guess the majority of people aren’t drinking enough! Sometimes we reach for food when really all we need is water. Keep reading….
So, what are Electrolytes?
Simply, these Electrolytes are minerals in your blood and other body fluids that carry an electric charge. They are very important in regulating the amount of water in your body which is essential for many bodily functions. Key functions such as keeping the body running by sending electric impulses to cells in your nerves and muscles, managing your blood pressure and repairing damaged tissue.
When we drink water it primarily hydrates you but it doesn’t always contain electrolytes; sodium, potassium, chloride and magnesium. These carry an electric charge when dissolved in water.
When dehydrated you may feel symptoms such as: headaches, dizziness, fast or abnormal heart rate, confusion, irritability, lethargy.
Electrolytes are particularly important when you are dehydrated due to exercise, hot weather and illness. We need to replenish these minerals when they are lost and that is when our bodies will feel fully hydrated.
We have many local shops that stock different brands, which can be sourced from (to name a few) .jsy and more….
Now the summer has finally shown up and we’re all soaking in the rich vitamin D, remember to STAY HYDRATED
