‘My advice would be to talk about it.’
Sometimes we might notice something isn’t quite right with someone we love.
But talking about it feels like the hardest thing in the world. You avoid it, they avoid it - until you can’t ignore it anymore.
It’s , and our friend Phoebe wanted to share a little advice that she learned through her lovely dad, John’s, journey to a diagnosis
‘Don't shy away from conversations and have the difficult ones.
‘Dad was first diagnosed at the end of 2021 with early-onset Alzheimer's, when he then took part in a clinical vaccination trial in Liverpool. Unfortunately, as he got worse he was no longer able to take part but the team there were amazing in helping us with next steps and how to navigate the diagnosis.
‘Before he got diagnosed, I remember noticing he would get extremely confused when we were travelling or plans changed, which meant he got very frustrated very quickly.
‘Looking back now, Dad has had symptoms for years, but we just put it down to his forgetful personality and laughed it off.
‘My advice would be to talk about it, I'd also say to get involved, actively trying to make a difference has helped me face the realities of Dad's diagnosis and given me a purpose, all whilst honouring my lovely Pops.'
Let’s stop putting off the tough conversations and let’s help more people know how to spot the symptoms of dementia.
