Yesterday, I visited Meadowfields Care Home for the last time this year, for the Christmas and New Years break. Here’s what we got up to!

For our warm up, we began with ballon volleyball which everyone had a turn at - you’re looking at the next England volleyball team here! They were ace!

Why warming up is essential?

Warming up increases the blood flow and ensures your muscles are supplied with enough oxygen.

Warming up, slowly increases your heart rate which helps to minimise stress on your heart.

For our skill-game, we practised our own version of basketball, with miniature balls. Jackie demonstrated this game very well! Topping the leaderboard amongst others, with 4 / 5.

Why are skill-games beneficial?

They aim to improve hand-eye coordination, cognitive function and enhancing motor skills such as, muscle memory.

A game of ring toss, is a good game for this.

It’ll also help you build strength in your arms which may allow you to perform everyday tasks, like eating and drinking, on your own!

Here are FIVE physical benefits which it offers YOU!

1. Improved Posture

Seated fitness can improve your posture through various back, neck and core strengthening exercises.

The following exercises, can help to prevent forward-head posture and can be done seated or standing:

- Seated rows
- Neck rotations
- Shoulder shrugs
- Trunk twists
- Butterfly kicks

2. Improved Flexibility

Stretching is the most effective form of exercise which aims to improve joint and muscular flexibility.

Gentle stretches can improve range of motion which makes it less difficult, to perform day to day activities.

Here’s what you could do with better flexibility:

- Make your bed
- Open / close curtains
- Walk around struggle-free
- Feed yourself at meals
- Grab your coffee or tea mugs

3. Improved Quality of Life

Amongst physical benefits, is a lot of mental and social benefits which mobility fitness can offer you.

The main physical benefits are:

- Improved functional fitness
- Decreased risk of heart conditions
- Reduced feelings of strain and soreness

Make sure your workout is built around effective and creative exercises and fun fitness games, like bean bag or ring toss.

4. Improved Mobility

Performing gentle, strain-free stretches and low impact exercises, can help counteract stiffness and reduced range of motion.

These occur if you’ve been sitting or lying down for prolonged periods of time.

Here’s what to do:

- Marching on the spot
- Wrist rotations
- Shoulder rolls
- Heel to toe raises
- Seated leg lifts

5. Improved Circulation

Performing low impact exercises, targeting your lower and upper body, can increase the blood flow around the body, prevent blood clots and prevent stiffness.

Here’s some top exercises and movements to try:

- Ankle circles
- Twisting shoulder raises
- Leg extensions
- Arm circles
- Seated leg kickouts
