The Stamford Surgery Sheepmarket and St Mary's Sites

The Stamford Surgery Sheepmarket and St Mary's Sites Welcome to The Stamford Surgery. Patients are at the heart of what we do and we couldn’t do it without our extensive team. About Lakeside Healthcare!

Our close-knit team of GPs, nurses, allied health professionals, administrative and reception staff provide healthcare services at both Sheepmarket and St Mary’s practices. Our team works collaboratively to provide healthcare services at both Sheepmarket and St Mary’s practices in our beautiful and historic town. We are fortunate to have a close-knit team of GPs, nurses, allied health professionals, administrative and reception staff, who are all dedicated to providing the best possible service for our community. We are lucky to have so many experienced and long serving colleagues, plus newer staff who are committed to a career in Primary Care. We have an experienced management team who deal with the daily running of our practices and our patient service advisors are there to help whether you have a medical concern or administrative query. They are very busy so if your enquiry can wait until after 11am each day then that would be appreciated and should save you time either waiting on the telephone or in our reception areas. We engage regularly with patients through our Patient Participation Group, taking their views into account where possible when making changes and listening to their views, issues and ideas. We also have productive working relationships with the Integrated Care Board and Care Quality Commission and make improvements as and where we can. As well as our daily work in surgeries we also work in the local community, making home visits, providing healthcare for residents in local care homes and offer advice and support on lifestyle and non-clinical issues with our Personalised Care Team of care coordinators and social prescribers. We are busier than ever so thank you for your understanding while we continue recruit, train and develop our team and working practices to see as many patients as we can safely. Stamford Surgery is a part of Lakeside Healthcare, a large GP partnership that provides NHS care for around 170,000 patients across Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and Northamptonshire. We are made up of eight GP practices across 14 sites that are all part of their local communities. We work together as practices to provide resilience, sharing learning and professional back-office support services. Our most important asset is our people, who provide care for our patients and help run our surgeries smoothly. We employ over 500 clinical and non-clinical staff and we invest in training and developing to ensure that we retain and attract good quality staff who want to stay with us and be part of our team. We also host a clinical research team who run high quality clinical trials and studies to support the development of new medications and preventative treatment for long-term conditions. We are proud of what we do and strive to demonstrate our values of Caring, Respect, Quality and Teamwork in everything we do.

Karen Brammer is very experienced in care of the elderly, a skill she uses to great advantage in her role as Care Coordinator for Four Counties Primary Care Network.

She began her career in a GP surgery with links to three nursing homes. Over the years she has worked in all aspects of care home and domiciliary work and has lots of additional qualifications. She has also worked in other sectors, notably owning the Stamford Cheese and Wine Cellar for ten years with her husband.

It is the care sector that she has a real passion for and so she decided to hang up her cheesemonger’s apron and go back, firstly as a care coordinator with two care companies in the town and now working with the PCN team working with patients from Stamford Surgery and The Hereward Practice in Bourne. She said: ‘I love Stamford so much and I just want to give back to my community. The only way I know how to do that is through care of older people. I am a big advocate for person-centred care and they have all got a story.’

We're thrilled to have been awarded the Greener Impact for Health Award after using a toolkit that helps GP practices to improve their sustainability and environmental credentials. We achieved enough points to qualify for the Silver Award and are now aiming for Gold.

GP Partner Dr Hannah Waddingham, had seen the initiative successfully put into place at one of her previous practices and she wanted to introduce it here. She was joined by Operations and Compliance Manager, Michelle Inwood and Pharmacist, Stuart Richmond, to make improvements where possible.

Michelle said: ‘It is doing things like improving energy consumption and efficiency, turning lights and equipment off and putting up signage to remind staff. Some of the items were about making sure that the medicines prescribed were appropriate. Some of the asthma inhalers which currently use greenhouse gases, could be replaced with dry powder inhalers, so it is about looking at making changes where we can, without affecting patient experience or safety.

'We are putting together working groups within the practice and want to involve the wider patient community, thinking about the efficiencies we can make and getting the team to lead areas they have an interest in. Dr Waddingham really was the driving force behind this initiative and we are excited to see where it goes. We have made a good start in our first year, and there are lots of avenues to develop and explore.'

Congratulations and thanks to Lee-Ann Gasson who has reached her 30-year milestone working for the NHS. She began her career as a receptionist at GP surgeries in Peterborough, before coming to St Mary’s in Stamford in 2012.

Lee-Ann, who loves learning new skills, has worked for us as a receptionist, administrator, Healthcare Assistant, and is now a member of our Quality Outcomes Framework (QOF) team, which helps patients with long term conditions including asthma, diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.

Lee-Ann said: ‘It has been a great career and when I started out aged 22 I never dreamt I would still be working in a GP practice 30 years later! Things are always changing, so you have to be adaptable. We have bigger teams and offer many more services compared to those early days.

‘For me, it is also about the people that you work with. All my colleagues are amazing, particularly Lisa and Dawn in the QOF team. You are constantly learning in this role which combines admin and patient care. I can’t believe how quickly the years have flown. I have made some great friends, love my job and wouldn’t change it for the world, so have no plans to stop anytime soon!’

Practice Manager, Teri White, said: 'Congratulations to Lee-Ann on a remarkable achievement. She has seen many changes over those 30 years and this brings a wealth of knowledge and experience into her current role. Lee-Ann is well respected and highly valued and I am proud to have her as part of the Stamford team.'

We were delighted to have our first face-to-face meeting with Chairs and officers of our Patient Participation Groups. They, and Chief Executive Jessica Bawden, regularly connect via Zoom but this was the first time that all met in person.

It was an opportunity to reflect on the past year and to continue working with our PPGs on service improvement. A recent highlight has been the implementation of Total Triage which has received positive reviews and patient feedback.

Jessica Bawden also spoke about future areas of focus while the PPGs gave updates about their work including patient liaison, drop-in events and health awareness talks.

Thank you to everyone who came along to the meeting or who volunteers in our Patient Participation Groups. You help us to shape our services and sites.

We are pleased to welcome Dr Jill Hamilton, who has joined our team as a GP Partner.

Dr Hamilton is an experienced GP Partner with a passion for community focused clinical work, with a particular interest in the care of older patients. Alongside her clinical work, she is currently studying for a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA), which she hopes she will be able to use to add to the future development of our practice.

Dr Hamilton wanted to join The Stamford Surgery team as she was keen to be part of a forward-thinking partnership and to have a voice in shaping the practice as it continues to develop.

Her route into medicine was slightly different from the traditional path. Dr Hamilton’s first degree was in physiology and pharmacology, after which she worked with the organ donor care team at Papworth Hospital. She found this work extremely rewarding and it inspired her to pursue a career in medicine. She later gained a place on Cambridge University’s graduate entry medical programme. Dr Hamilton initially trained as an anaesthetist, but then decided to switch to a career in general practice in 2014.

Dr Hamilton was also attracted by the size and scope of our surgery, as well as the welcoming and professional culture. Having trained alongside some of the doctors who work here, she wanted to bring her skills in to a team that she felt was trying to drive positive change, and contribute to the progress that the surgery has made.

In her previous role, she worked closely with care homes and wants to continue this important work. She values good communication with patients, families and care staff, and believes that well-coordinated care can make a real difference to people’s lives.

Since joining us, Dr Hamilton has enjoyed a positive induction and is now running her own clinics. She is looking forward to getting to know her patients and continuing to develop her skills as part of our team.
