CHECK WHO’s WHO!!

One of the biggest pieces of advance I can give to owners is check the credentials of the professionals you choose to use for your animal.

Currently the veterinary physiotherapy industry is unregulated and therefore literally anyone can call themselves a practitioner and treat animals.

I believe there is a place in the industry for all vet physios/ massage therapists/ bodyworkers etc. however I also believe that owners should know exactly what they are getting and what qualifications that person has.

This worryingly goes for other equine professionals too.

We give full transparency and can be found not only on the Register of Musculoskeletal Practitioners (RAMP), but clearly display our insurance on our website for anyone to view.

This post is sparked by recently seeing a number of horses having undergone a specific electrotherapy treatment with negative implications, due to the person using the devise having no veterinary or equine qualifications ☹️

We love our animals dearly so by trying to provide the best care for them, please do your homework.

Remembrance Day

A thank you to all the service men, women and animals who fought so bravely for our country.

As some of my clients know, I am a huge Cleveland Bay fan. In WWI and WWII, Cleveland Bays were extensively used by the military as strong and agile artillery and transport horses. So today one of my CB’s is wearing each of her poppys proudly.

Trigeminal-medicated headshakng is something I am seeing diagnosed alot more in recent months, but what is the real cause?

Vet and recognised Equine Medicine specialist Veronica Roberts, at Bristol university was awarded fellowship of the RCVS for her clinical work and research on this topic.

Her finding stated…

1. If a horse headshakes only under saddle and not on the lunge, then the diagnosis should not be TMH.
2. If the headshaking is stimulated by sunshine, falling rain or snow then the diagnosis should not be TMH.
3. Often headshaking is due to a response to pain stimulus somewhere else in the body.
4. In confirmed cases 70-75% of horses were geldings.
5. PENS treatment offeres a 50% success rate with a risk of side effects.

With these factors in mind, diagnosis can be challenging for the vets and I therefore believe it is important to consider alternative therapy be used to rule out point 3 and any chance that the headshaking is a result or pain or discomfort within the body.

Both the autonomic and somatic nervous system of the horse can be influenced by physiotherapy, along with ability to reduce pain sensation, stimulate circulation and promote muscle and fascia mobilisation.

Like so many things in the equine industry, electrotherapy seems to have become the latest “fashionable” treatment for horses. I have lost count of how many messages I’ve received lately of owners requesting a specific electrotherapy treatment without really know how it works and why they want that specific treatment.

I 100% agree with using electrotherapy, so many of my clients will know that I offer multiple different electrotherapy treatments (PEMF included), but I would really urge owners to hire a fully licensed and qualified professional to provide the treatment (not someone who has just purchased a machine) and remember that these treatments are not a substitute for hands on therapy from a qualified veterinary physiotherapist.

Electrotherapy like PEMF is complex and not suitable for all patients. There are also conditions in which electrotherapy should never be used. It is important that the person administering it knows how to use it correctly.

The importance of having professionals check your horse!

For a couple of weeks I knew that one of my horses wasn’t quite right. Not that she wasn’t working well or behaving any different, she just hasn’t seemed herself and had started to look a little run down. So I decided to have all the routine checks done before asking the vets to run some bloods.

The dentist came today and we discussed my worries but as soon as she opened her mouth with the gag, she spotted this. Some might think this is from the bit, but we checked and the bit sits nowhere near.

When cleaning it the dentist found a large hay seed in the wound which will have been extremely uncomfortable ☹️

Not happy with not knowing what has caused this, I have watched my CCTV footage and have found the cause. Lizzie turned to scratch her tummy through her rug one evening and gets her bottom jaw caught in the nylon strap on her rug. She frees herself quickly and after mouthing and shaking her head a few times goes back to eating.

This just goes to show the importance of having professionals check your horse regularly and knowing your horses behaviour.
