https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/14753634.2025.2589910 We’re very pleased to share that Phil Adlem, who completed his clinical placement with us at The Henry Centre, has recently had a journal article published on Taylor & Francis Online.

Phil is a graduate of Birkbeck, University of London, and it is always meaningful to see former trainees continuing to deepen their thinking and contribute to the wider psychodynamic literature.

Publication marks an important professional step — reflecting intellectual rigour, clinical commitment and the confidence to enter the analytic conversation.

Warm congratulations to Phil on a well-deserved achievement.

A recent article by Alex MacLeish from our Westcliff team, published on the Counselling Directory, explores the complex experience of parents disowning their children.

It’s a thoughtful piece on rupture, loyalty and the psychological cost of estrangement.

I am Helen Viana, a devoted Psychodynamic Psychotherapist committed to guiding both children and adults toward emotional well-being and personal growth. The intricacies of how early experiences influence our emotions have always captivated me.
My journey in this field is fuelled by a genuine desire to offer compassionate care and support to individuals of all ages, with a particular focus on children and their families. With over 20 years of experience as a psychologist and psychotherapist, my initial training in clinical psychology in Brazil sparked my passion for working with children and families, leading me to pursue further studies in early infancy and parental guidance.
Driven by a profound interest in psychodynamic studies, I earned a Master’s degree in counselling children and adults with distinction from the University of Essex, solidifying my role as a Psychodynamic Counsellor.
In my work with children, I've learned the importance of creating a secure and empathetic space for them to freely express their feelings. Grounded in psychodynamic principles, my therapeutic approach recognizes the significant influence of a child's early experiences and relationships on their emotional landscape.
Acknowledging the crucial role of the family in a child's life, I collaborate closely with parents and caregivers to offer comprehensive support, aiming to cultivate a nurturing home environment that enhances a child's emotional well-being.
Beyond my therapeutic practice, I'm dedicated to raising awareness about children's mental health issues, actively participating in community workshops, seminars, and webinars to share insights and knowledge with parents, educators, and fellow professionals.
If you're seeking a supportive space for your child's emotional growth, I'm here to help. Feel free to reach out and schedule a consultation.

Hi there, I’m Laura, a psychodynamic counsellor offering individual counselling both in person and online.

I hold a Master’s degree in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy from the University of Essex.

My approach is guided by the principles of psychoanalysis, helping individuals explore the unconscious patterns that influence their daily lives. These patterns, often hidden, can profoundly impact emotional well-being and personal growth.

In our work together, you’ll have a safe space to explore the past, particularly childhood experiences, and uncover unresolved conflicts or repressed memories that may lie at the heart of current struggles. By bringing these challenges to light, we can begin to understand how they contribute to challenges such as anxiety, depression, relationship issues, or feelings of inner conflict.

It is important to understand that deep-seated patterns and emotional wounds take time to unravel. As Freud said, “We are what we are because we have been what we have been”. This therapeutic process involves uncovering, understanding, and ultimately integrating the unconscious into your conscious life, leading to clarity and self-awareness whilst creating space for authentic connection.

Sessions typically follow a weekly structure, scheduled at the same time each week for 50 minutes. This consistency allows us to build a strong therapeutic relationship and ensures that you have a dedicated, uninterrupted space to explore, uncover and work through relational patterns.

If this approach resonates with you, or if you have any questions, please contact me. I am currently accepting new clients for both online work and in-person. I offer flexible appointment times to accommodate your schedule, with both daytime and evening availability.

In our first session, we will approach things a bit differently. We will spend some time discussing and setting up the framework for our work together, this is called ‘contracting’. Contracting in counselling means that we will establish some guidelines and agreements to ensure that both of us are clear on how we will work together, what to expect, and how best I can support you.

Happy Birthday, Sigmund Freud (1856–1939)

He taught us that symptoms have meaning, that words can heal, and that the mind has layers worth exploring.

Yes, the world has changed — and so has therapy — but the heart of our work still begins where Freud pointed:
Listening deeply, thinking symbolically, and believing that insight can transform lives.

Today we honour the roots of psychotherapy and continue the work of helping people make sense of themselves — with integrity, curiosity, and care.
