Colleagues from all over Scotland gathered to learn about complex epilepsy and treatments.

Very informative presentations on Epilepsy genetics, Metabolic epilepsies, Ketogenic diet, Treatment of Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome and Epilepsy surgery.

SPESS team members delivered presentations on

“Network in delivering an epilepsy Surgery Programme”

Studies show early referral for discussion and epilepsy surgery at an early age improve outcomes and quality of life.

If you are unsure if you or your child may be a suitable candidate for Epilepsy surgery speak with your consultant in clinic and ask.

Meet the 'sleepy doctors'! We understand that coming for an operation, scan or procedure that needs a child or young person to have some 'sleepy medicine' (known as an anaesthetic) can be worrying. Your child might be feeling nervous, you might have some questions about what to expect or be confused about whether they can eat or drink. We've added some new information to our website for children and families, with helpful information, pictures, leaflets and contact details for Crichton Unit at the , where our day case operations usually take place. For children and young people having surgery or procedures in other places, such as St. John's Hospital, these pages will be helpful for them too. Take a look and meet the team!

We received this beautiful piece of art from one of our little epilepsy warriors recently, Hamish has been seizure free since his epilepsy surgery 4 years ago. Pre surgery he experienced a disabling seizure frequency, it is fantastic to see his developmental gains and improved quality of life 💜

This beautiful glitter pill mandala represents the power of medicine to help and heal. Sometimes the magic of medicine alone is not enough.
The aim of epilepsy surgery is to reduce or stop seizures.
It can result in seizure freedom and discontinuation of medication for some, others require the combination of surgery and medication.

It's and we'd like to give a big shout out to all of the volunteers working so hard to help children, young people and their families across NHS Lothian. Christine (pictured here on the left) is one of our welcome team at the in Edinburgh, greeting children and families as they arrive, helping with directions, giving out masks or sanitiser where it's needed and generally being friendly and fabulous!

A retired primary teacher, Christine has also volunteered on the Haematology and Oncology wards as a play leader, before rejoining the old 'Sick Kids' in January this year and transferring to the brand new RHCYP in March. Christine told us:
"I love the personal contact with the patients (young and old) and their relatives. I hope that by having a little chat with them as we go to wherever , I am able to provide a reassuring welcome and a little break before whatever appointment they are attending. I also love how the time just whizzes by! "

Thank you to Christine and our whole team of welcoming at all of our hospitals. You do an amazing job! 💙

Reflecting on our patients as the lift to theatre closed for the last time.
Of the many helpless and despairing parents we have tried to comfort as they give their child into our care.
The many children we have taken back down that lift post surgery.
The ones you know are going to make for a long shift, the ones already fighting the head bandage and lines, the ones that will now have a life, the ones on their way to a better life, the ones that have a challenging life ahead, the ones already bouncing back. Every single one a privilege 💙💜
