If your child has any of the signs or symptoms of diabetes, you should take them straight to the doctor and ask for a blood glucose test.

The most common symptoms of type 1 diabetes in children are:

🚽 Toilet: Going to the toilet a lot to pass urine, bed wetting by a previously dry child or heavier nappies in babies.
💦 Thirsty: Being thirsty and unable to quench the thirst. Asking for drinks more often and finishing quickly.
💤 Tired: Feeling more tired than usual. Having less energy than normal, not playing as often, less energy for sports
🪞 Thinner: Losing weight or looking thinner than usual.

You may also notice your child getting more infections than usual.

Type 1 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes in children. Symptoms tend to come on within a matter of days or weeks and you should get urgent medical help if you notice any of these symptoms.

The symptoms of type 2 diabetes in children are the same as they are for type 1 diabetes, but they may be less obvious and develop more slowly, for example over weeks or months but you may still notice them.

Please see your GP as quickly as possible if you suspect your child may be struggling with this condition. A quick and simple finger prick test will indicate or rule out high blood sugar and your GP will refer your child to a specialist diabetes team or hospital while the test will be sent to the lab to diagnose diabetes.

For lots more information directly from check out Episode 12 of the Family Health Podcast where we chat with Diabetes UK and do a deep dive into this condition. What to look out for, what to do and what you can expect if your child gets a diabetes diagnosis.

Have you considered how visible your child would be under the water in different coloured swimsuits and trunks?

We share this graphic every summer as it’s such a brilliant example of how a small change in what you dress your child in at the pool could make a huge difference.

The brilliant team at Aquatic Safety Connection has tested how different colours appear in various water types and states, such as swimming pools, choppy waters, and murky ponds and lakes.

You can see from this image that white and light blue are almost invisible to the eye when at the bottom of a pool with agitated water. Dark colours are visible but can sometimes be mistaken for shadows or pool equipment.

Something to consider when you are next shopping for summer swimwear, opt for bright and contrasting colours!

You’ll find lots more advice on water safety and other safe travelling tips in our blog (link in comments), or take a look at Royal Life Saving Society UK - RLSS UK for lots of valuable tips this

Runny noses, itchy and watery eyes are common and for some people it also comes with headaches and earache, loss of smell and generally feeling really poorly.

Hayfever can sometimes be mistaken for a common cold as some of the symptoms are similar, please remember you can chat with your GP or pharmacist if your child is suffering and you would like their opinion.

When the British weather finally begins to turn a little more spring-like, that’s when families like to start getting outdoors with little ones, visiting parks and going for country walks and it’s the time of year when tick bites become more common.

Ticks are mostly found in woods, fields and moorland, the cannot jump or fly, instead they climb a piece of grass or vegatation and wait for a passing human or animal to catch hold of.
While most tick bites are harmless, some ticks can carry diseases like Lyme disease so it’s a good idea to know what Lyme Disease is and how to spot the signs.

It can be really frightening to experience a seizure or see someone having a seizure so it’s really important to understand what to do if you happen to be in that place at that time.

Epilepsy is a neurological condition where there is a tendency to have seizures that start in the brain. Not all seizures are due to epilepsy. Other conditions that can look like epilepsy include fainting, or when people with diabetes have low blood sugar and have a diabetic seizure.
