Most people would say they have heard of sepsis, but when asked whether they know the signs and symptoms, the answer is different.

At Mini First Aid, we educate about sepsis in all of our first aid classes. It’s something we take very seriously because sepsis claims the lives of 50,000 people in the UK every single year.

Last week, our founder Kate was at the Houses of Parliament for a reception with our charity partners The UK Sepsis Trust. Hosted by the brilliant sepsis survivor ‘Bionic Peer’ Lord Craig Mackinlay, together with Harry Redknapp, Melissa Mead MBE and actor Jason Watkins. An incredible gathering of people, all focused on saving lives. The stories were so moving.

Thank you to Dr Ron Daniels BEM and Sarah Hamilton-Fairley for filling a room with health care professionals, passionate educators, those with lived experience of sepsis, and government representatives who truly care about the future of sepsis research, education and treatment.

This event really drove home how important our work in raising sepsis awareness in the community through our first aid classes really is, and we continue to support The UK Sepsis Trust wherever we can.

Every year, thousands of infants need medical care for poisoning from products commonly found in and around the home.

Items such as cleaning products, cosmetics, medicines, alcohol and gardening products.

If you are planning some spring cleaning in your home over the coming weeks, make sure you keep products in a secure location, in high cupboards or locked storage so that little hands can’t access easily. Also be careful when you are in the middle of cleaning, that you don’t leave the cleaning product sitting anywhere that could be reached by your child.

Poisoning can happen after swallowing, touching, or breathing in a harmful substance.

Symptoms may take a few hours or days to start, so it’s important to get medical advice quickly if there’s a chance you or someone else could have poisoning.

*Symptoms of poisoning can depend on what caused it, and may include:

Feeling sick or being sick
Diarrhoea
Feeling sleepy
Blurred vision
High temperature, or feeling hot, cold or shivery
Confusion
Difficulty breathing
Seizures (fits)
Loss of consciousness

If you suspect your child might have swallowed something toxic:

⚠️Get medical help immediately, call 111 or 999
⚠️Don’t let your child drink anything
⚠️Don’t make your child sick
⚠️If you know what they have swallowed, try to take a sample to hospital
⚠️Residual chemicals on the skin should be rinsed with plenty of water

If your child had an allergic reaction, would you know what to do?

At Mini First Aid, we know this is a worry that sits in the back of so many parents’ minds. Allergies can appear suddenly, symptoms can escalate quickly, and knowing how to respond in those first few moments can make all the difference.

That’s why we’re so proud to share that our award-winning Baby & Child First Aid classes now include Allergy & Anaphylaxis Awareness as part of the lesson plan 🙌

This brand-new addition means that parents and carers attending our classes will now learn:

💚 How to recognise the signs of a mild allergic reaction
💚 How to spot when a reaction is becoming more serious
💚 The key symptoms of anaphylaxis
💚 What to do in those crucial first moments before help arrives

Delivered in line with guidance from Allergy UK , this training is designed to give you confidence, clarity and calm in what can feel like a very frightening situation, because when it comes to our little ones, it’s not just about knowing what might happen, it’s about knowing what you should do if it does.

A study by the UK Obstetric Surveillance System found mortality due to maternal sepsis has increased in the UK and is now the leading cause of direct maternal death.

This eye-opening story is about Lauren who contracted sepsis hours after she was discharged from hospital following the birth of her baby.

Make sure you and your loved ones can spot maternal sepsis – it could save a life. You can read more information on our blog, guest-written by The UK Sepsis Trust , find the link in the comments.

If you are heading off on a road trip this Easter - you NEED to read this!

We have probably all, at some time, passed our child a snack while they are sitting in the back of the car. Maybe to placate them or ease their boredom or because they are hungry and asking for one!

For older children, this doesn’t usually pose a great risk, but for babies and younger children, the risk of choking and whether or not you would notice it happening and be in a situation to help them is worth consideration.

We know that when a child gags on something they are eating, you can hear them, but when a child has something stuck in their windpipe, they will not make a sound. If you are driving, you might not be able to tell when your child is in trouble.

Consider the risks, take precautions with what type of snacks and foods you give them, and prepare food to reduce the risk of choking.

And if possible, leave snacks until after your journey, or have someone sit in the back alongside the child to keep an eye on them.

Would you have thought about this risk?

Not all signs are obvious. Some are quiet, subtle and easy to miss when you’re running on little sleep and just trying to get through the day.
As parents, we’re constantly told “every child develops at their own pace”, and that’s true. But it’s also okay to notice when something feels different.
Autism can present in many ways, especially in young children, and early signs aren’t always obvious. Some things to gently look out for include:
Not responding to their name
Limited or no eye contact
Not smiling back when you smile at them
Becoming very upset by certain sounds, smells or textures
Repetitive movements like hand flapping, rocking or finger flicking
Delayed speech or talking less than other children their age
Less interest in pretend play
Repeating the same words or phrases
Seeing one or even a few of these signs doesn’t automatically mean a child is autistic, but noticing patterns over time is important.
Trust your instincts. You know your child better than anyone.
If you do have concerns, you’re never wasting anyone’s time by asking for advice. Speaking to your health visitor, GP or special educational needs (SENCO) staff at your child’s school can help you get reassurance or the right support early on.
At Mini First Aid, we’re here to give you confidence, not just in emergencies, but in understanding your child and knowing when to seek help.
You’re doing an amazing job 🙌🏻

What if we told you that a high temperature could cause your child to have a seizure, and many parents have never even heard of it?

It’s called a febrile seizure, and more often than not, when parents come to our baby & child first aid classes, it’s the first time they learn that this can happen.

We never share information to frighten you. We share it because knowledge replaces panic with composure 💚

If your child ever experiences a febrile seizure and you’ve never heard of one before, it can be incredibly distressing. But when you understand what’s happening and what to do, you feel calmer, more confident and in control.

Forewarned really is forearmed when it comes to our little ones.
